According to an article in the Steamboat Springs, Colorado newspaper, Steamboat Pilot & Today, airline baggage fees are helping improve the bottom line of ski and snowboard rental businesses.
With baggage fees adding to the cost of transporting items to and from a resort, many ski vacationers are opting to leave their bulky items at home and to rent winter sports equipment for their stay at a big mountain.
The article quotes Michael Berry, president of the National Ski Areas Association, as saying “The growth of (rentals of) high-end demos has been huge,” Berry said. “We’ll rent you the right ski for the right day, and not only that, we’ll deliver it to your condominium. You’ll never have to touch them except when you drag them out to the snow.”
Berry said skiers and snowboarders turn to rentals for several reasons. In addition to eliminating the cost of hauling personal equipment to a destination resort, renters also can sample newer equipment than they might currently own. Rental customers also have the flexibility of swapping out equipment to adapt to changing snow conditions. Whether you are planning a trip to Taos NM, Lake Tahoe, Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley & Blue Ridge Mountains, or one of Colorado’s ski resort areas like Breckenridge & Aspen, few vacationers know with certainty whether they’ll experience groomed slopes or deep powder during their resort visit.
