The dog days of summer are here. In between trips to the ballpark, the pool or the beach, it’s important to make sure your lawn is getting plenty of love during the year’s hottest and driest months. So how can you keep your yard looking green when the weather gets hot? Below, we’ve shared a few summer lawn care tips from Julie Washington of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Good luck!
- Feed regularly: Strong roots help your yard withstand heat, foot traffic, and dry spells, says Washington, so it’s best to keep it well-fertilized. Shoot for four times a year, including twice in the spring and once in the summer and fall. Use a fertilizer combined with pre-emergent to control crabgrass early in the spring and lawn food with broadleaf weed control later in the season, according to Scotts.
- Don’t mow too low: Washington says you should only mow the top third of the grass when cutting, so raise that mower deck. Taller grass blocks out weeds and protects the ground from drying out, according to HGTV.
- When to water: If your lawn is established, it can tolerate dry spells, says Washington. Also, longer grass can handle drought better, so don’t cut too low. Finally, grass growing in the shade uses less water than a yard in full sun so you shouldn’t have to water it as often.
- More on water: According to DIY Network, most lawns need 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week to stay lush and green. Adjust accordingly for soil type, sunlight, grass type, and climate.
- Know the types of grass: As a general rule, cool-season grasses go dormant during the warm weather and warm-season grasses go dormant during the cooler months, says HGTV.
