Summer vacation is underway. Planning on getting out of town for a couple days (or a couple weeks)? Read on. Below, we’ve shared a list of mistakes you don’t want to make when traveling with your family or friends, courtesy of Melissa Neiman for MoneyTalksNews.com. Safe travels!
Forgetting to keep track of your mail
Neiman says that it’s important for travelers not to forget to take care of their mail. Letting letters, magazines, and other mail pile up, she says, tells thieves you are not at home. If you plan on being gone for a long period of time, ask a trusted neighbor to empty the mailbox or place a hold on your mail.
Getting careless with valuables at the beach
If you’re heading to the beach, says Neiman, be sure to secure your valuables, such as your keys, wallet and phone, before hopping in the water. A waterproof bag is a great way to house all of your belongings in a single, safe and dry location, she says. You can also use a lock-safe bag or waterproof fanny pack. Other approaches include sitting close to lifeguard stands or beach stand attendants and using the buddy system.
Traveling at peak times
Although most people are off work Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Independence Day, it might make more sense to travel at a different time, says Neiman, to avoid crowds and higher rates.
