Earlier this month, Eileen Ogintz wrote an article for the Chicago Tribune on several organizations in Colorado that offer special sports and activity programs for individuals of all ages with physical limitations and disabilities.
In the article, Ogintz writes about a disabled woman from Winter Park, Colorado suffering from cerebral palsy who, despite being confined to a wheelchair, is able to go skiing, scuba-diving, and rock climbing thanks to The National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) located right in her hometown.
The NCSD offers winter and summer adventures to thousands of disabled adults and kids and their families from all 50 states and around the globe. Now in its 46th year, NCSD is just one of several organizations in Colorado that offer programming for the disabled, including the Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte, which offers camps for kids and teens with autism, as well as the Breckinridge Outdoor Education Center and the STARS program in Steamboat. In Denver, the NCSD offers canoe, kayak, and whitewater sessions as well as programs for vets and special-ability clinics sponsored by Denver professional sports teams.
Currently, NCSD offers opportunities to try 30 different sports around the country and, more importantly, the organization doesn’t turn any participant away.
