Often the first on the scene of an emergency, police cruisers are rarely equipped with the medical devices needed to save a life. In Vail, Colorado, that’s no longer the case.
According to a story in the Vail Daily, each marked patrol car, including code enforcement officer vehicles, have now been equipped with an automatic external defibrillator or AED. An AED is a “computerized medical device that can recognize an abnormal heart rhythm which requires an electrical shock, and will advise the rescuer when a shock is needed to restore the heart’s natural rhythm,” according to the article.
Because there is typically a small window of time – usually 10 minutes or less – to save the victim in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, the department’s police chief felt it was necessary to equip each vehicle with an AED to better serve the community. The chief says that officers have been trained to use the devices, which will be equipped with a rescue mask first responder kit and electrodes for infants and children, for over five years.
According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest is the cause of 350,000 deaths per year. The use of a defibrillator can increase the chance of surviving cardiac arrest by 70 percent. Without the aid of a defibrillator, the chance of survival drops by 10 percent for every minute that passes. The organization also believes the widespread use of automated defibrillators could save roughly 40,000 lives each year in the U.S.
