Zoll LifeVest Wearable Defibrillator

The FDA has approved the use of a wearable defibrillator by children, according to an article by Iltifat Husain for iMedicalApps.com.

The device, the Zoll Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator, had only been used by adults up to this point. According to Husain, the wearable defibrillator can monitor dangerous arrhythmias and delivers high energy shocks to stabilize the heart when necessary. If an abnormal heart rhythm is detected by the device, an alarm is sounded. If the patient is alert or asymptomatic, the patient can prevent the shock. If they are not, a verbal warning is given before the shock is delivered. A blue gel is released within the electrodes before the high energy shock is given.

Thanks to the FDA’s approval, the device can now be worn by pediatric patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest who are not candidates for implantable defibrillators.
