Apparently, green is the new black for bottom lines. According to a recent article by Leah Messinger for The Guardian, green building construction is on track to make up a quarter of the construction market in the United States in 2015.
Citing a new report from the US Green Business Council (USGBC), Messinger writes that America has generated nearly $168 billion in the last three years, supporting more than two million jobs and yielding almost $150 billion in earnings for construction workers.
The report predicts that the green market will grow 15.1% annually, from $150.6 billion in 2015 to $224.4 billion in 2018. By 2018, Messinger reports that more than a third of all construction will be green. During that same time period, green building is expected to support 3.9 billion jobs, bring $268 billion to industry workers, and add $202 billion to GDP.
Last year, a report by McGraw Hill Construction also forecast huge growth in green construction. That report, according to Messinger, predicted that by 2018, 84% of companies building new homes will be building 15% of them to be green.
The report by the USGBC defines green building as focusing on the categories of “energy efficiency, water efficiency, resource efficiency, responsible site management, and improved indoor air quality.”
What do you think? Will the green construction market meet these expectations?
