What to Do Now if You’re Selling Your Home Next Spring

DIY projects to do before you sell your home

If you’re thinking about selling your home, you probably know that one of the best times to put it on the market is in the spring. If that’s the game plan, that means you have a few months this fall to get your home ready for buyers once spring rolls around in 2016.

So what should you do? Below, we’ve shared a list of top fall projects to get your home “in tip-top shape for a spring sale,” courtesy of Jennifer Nelson for HouseLogic.com. Good luck!

  1. Update Your Curb Appeal: Curb appeal is important, so make sure your bushes are trimmed and re-mulch or replace stone walkways and paths. You should also remove dead plants and trees and aerate your lawn so “it will be lush come spring.” Other things to consider include pressure washing the driveway, front walk, and your home’s exterior and if needed, applying a fresh coat of paint to the home or the front door, says Nelson.
  2. Get a Home Inspection: 77% of homebuyers have an inspection dome before completing a home purchase, according to the National Association of Realtors. To avoid surprises, have your own inspection done and make any repairs in the winter before you list your home, recommends Nelson.
  3. Replace Flooring and Paint Walls: Take a look at your carpets and determine whether they need to be deep cleaned or replaced altogether. If you’re going to replace them, consider hardwood or another material that might be more attractive to buyers. Also, check your interior walls for dirt or scuffs marks and apply a fresh coat of paint. Go with a more neutral palette, including beiges, light grays, and off whites, Nelson suggests.
