A Simple Act of Kindness

It’s easy to be cynical about the world we live in and fall into a mental rut. It seems for every optimistic person there’s a thousand pessimists–count Liz Woodward among the optimist crowd.

The New Jersey native recently served breakfast to two firefighters whom she overheard discussing a recent fire the department was called to put out. The “war story” caught Woodward’s ear and she felt compelled to buy the two men breakfast and leave a brief memento explaining her gratitude for their efforts.

The gesture of appreciation penned on a guest check didn’t go unnoticed. Firefighter Tim Young took to his Facebook page to endorse the local restaurant and suggest they “tip big” if they happen to have Woodward as their waitress. The kindness doesn’t stop there. The firefighters learned that Woodward’s father, Steve, is a quadriplegic and has been paralyzed for five years.

Woodward had been operating a crowd-funding page for her father in effort to raise funds for a wheelchair accessible van. To return the favor of gratitude, the firefighters promoted the crowd-funding page among their personal networks and managed to help bring in $70,000 for the Woodward family–over fifty-thousand more dollars than the $17,000 goal!
