Looking to cash in on this trend, a new start-up based in Nipomo, California has set out to connect travelers who want to rent an RV with RV owners looking to make an extra buck. The founders, who were looking to tap into the alternative lodging and special events markets, according to an article in the Pacific Business Times, took their initial concept into a technology entrepreneurship course at Stanford to “vet the idea and deepen their industry knowledge.”After a successful test run, the company decided to launch on the Central Coast, an area they were familiar with.
While other peer-to-peer platforms, such as Airbnb and Uber, have been impacted by insurance and tax issues and other government regulations, the founders of RVPlusYou believe they have created a model that will help their company slip past all of the red tape. Because RV owners are responsible for driving their own vehicle to the campground and setting it up for a renter, there is no need for renters to pay large insurance premiums. Additionally, because RVs are set up within campgrounds, camping fees are factored into the rental. On the other hand, Airbnb avoids paying similar fees (e.g. bed-tax) which has caused an outcry from the hotel industry.
Currently, RVPlusYou has just under 30 RV owners signed up to accommodate travelers throughout the Central Coast, but the company hopes to add 5,000 listings by the end of the year. The business is targeting music festivals, breweries, sporting events, and wineries to try and secure lodging agreements. To boost revenues, the company is working on expanding its services and its website and also offers a concierge service for an additional fee.
