Affordable (and Warm) U.S. Winter Getaways

Bourbon Street New OrleansAfter this week’s “Snowmageddon”, I think most of us here in Northern Kentucky could use a vacation filled with warm temperatures and lots of sunshine and less of frigid winter temperatures. More importantly, we need to get away without breaking the bank. To help us decide on a destination (and get the planning party started), the Boston Globe recently shared a list of the most affordable (and warmest) places to visit in the U.S. this winter. We’ve summarized two of our favorites from their list below. Safe travels!

Austin, Texas

Austin offers “outdoor fun, stylish hotels, a culinary revival, a vibrant music scene, and 300 days of sunshine each year.” At the Lone Star Court, room rates start at $79 and that includes breakfast. Visitors can also check out the 10-mile trail around Lady Bird Lake and the entertainment on Rainy Street or watch the sunset from Mount Bonnell. Another fun freebie is the Zilker Kite Festival in March.

Looking for cheap eats? Hit up The Picnic, a food-trailer park on Barton Springs Road, that has as many as eight different food trucks parked there at any given time.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Hailed as one of Lonely Planet’s “Best in the US 2015” guidebook picks, this city has it all. Check out a tour of the French Quarter, a National Historic Landmark District, offered by the National Park Service or take in the free music performed by street musicians or at one of the many local jazz clubs.

Other free things to do include a visit to the Barataria Preserve in Jean Lafitte National Park or a tour of the “city’s amazing above-ground gravesites,” including Lafayette Cemetery #1 in the Garden District. Another popular spot to browse is on Magazine Street, home to more than 80 unique shops. For food, Café du Monde is a must and if you’re looking for a cheap way to get around, hop aboard the historic streetcars in NOLA for just $1.25 per trip.
