Is 2015 the year you’ll finally retire and call it quits for good? Congratulations! You’ve earned it. While most seniors see retirement as a chance to rest after decades of punching a time clock, the fact that you don’t have to deal with the daily grind doesn’t mean you have to be regulated to a recliner for the remainder of your days. Staying active and getting involved is not only great for your physical well-being but your mental and emotional health as well. Fortunately, many city recreation departments across the country understand the importance of reaching out to seniors and engaging them.

In New Orleans, the city’s Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) “offers a wide variety of fitness and wellness opportunities” for adults, including those 55 years of age and older.  One of these programs is Senior Dance Fitness which involves stretching, cardio, dance, fun music, and healthy eating and lifestyle education. It also includes performance opportunities, access to special master workshops, social events, and discount tickets to city ballet presentations. Another popular event is held on National Seniors Day at a city recreation center. In 2014, the event drew 150 participants and included fitness activities, community health presentations, health screenings, line dancing, performances, and the Senior Olympics. If you don’t live in New Orleans, please check with your local town or city recreation department for information on available programs for seniors.
