Winter is closing in and plenty of snow, ice and cold temperatures will likely come with it. So where are the best places to escape the polar vortex this December? Below, we’ve shared a short list of the best American islands to visit when temperatures in your area plummet, courtesy of the travel experts at Budget Travel. Our advice? Get out while you still can.

Amelia Island, FL: Featuring 13 miles of beaches that are mostly deserted until March, this northern Florida destination offers plenty of things to do including horseback riding, exploring Fort Clinch, and exploring the boutiques and Victorian mansions in the historic district.

Avery Island, LA: Go on a free tour of the Tabasco Pepper Sauce Factory or visit the Jungle Gardens, a bird sanctuary that opened in 1935. Love wildlife? Avery Island is a great place to spot deer, racoons, and alligators. Another area worth checking out is New Iberia, about 30 minutes north, which has a solid selection of restaurants and B&Bs.

Caladesi Island, FL: A state park, Caladesi Island features three miles of white sand beaches and a 108-slip marina. There are no places to stay on the island and no cars, either. A ferry will take you from Honeymoon Island to this destination which offers kayaking and sightseeing along a boardwalk nature trail. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch, however, because there is only one concession stand on the island.

Molokai, HI: There are no traffic lights or hotels on this beautiful island which is the least visited in all of Hawaii. The island features a rugged northern coast with the world’s highest sea cliffs, a southern coast that “gently wades in to the sea,” and a “rocky interior punctuated by three extinct volcanoes.” The top tourist spot is the Kalaupapa National Historic Park, a former leper colony that is reachable only by foot or mule. Looking for a beach? The Papohaku is home to three miles of “glimmering gold sand.”
