John Wayne was larger than life and so were his interests. His role as the amiable, straight-laced cowboy hero would appear in nearly 250 movies from 1930 to 1977. The Duke, as Wayne would come to be nicknamed, has one of the most legendary careers of all time. Over 35 years since his death, fans can still walk in Wayne’s boots by renting the Wild Goose–the once private yacht of Wayne.
The USS YMS-328 (later re-named Wild Goose) was a yard mine sweeper owned by the US Navy (1942-1948). She served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II, sweeping minefields at Attu and Kiska. John Wayne purchased the yacht in 1962, who renovated the ship to accommodate casual guests. Wayne owned the yacht the last 17 years of his life, entertaining presidents such as Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan on the Wild Goose.
