Across America, job growth has continued to crawl at a snail’s pace over the past several years. Recently, however, some industries such as construction and home health services have seen the pace of employment numbers pick up. Following the release of the results from a new survey, we can add the hotel industry to this list.
Based on a survey from the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) and WageWatch, Inc., the hotel industry offers “good, high-paying jobs with benefits and a fast track to senior positions within the hospitality sector,” says Hopitality.net. These survey findings come on the heels of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment’s report for August which showed sustained job growth in the seasonally adjusted “Accommodations” segment of the “Leisure and Hospitality” sector.
According to the survey, which represents 23 percent of the 53,000 hotels in the industry today, 40 percent of respondents pay 100% of their workforce more than the minimum wage, nearly 86 percent provide medical insurance benefits to non-exempt workers, and 80 percent of minimum wage workers are eligible for a promotion in less than a year on the job.
Following the release of the survey, the president and CEO of AH&LA called the hotel sector “the bright spot in our nation’s economy” and said that hotel jobs are good jobs with high wages and opportunities to advance quickly. A representative with WageWatch, Inc. echoed these statements and called the hotel industry “a leader in job creation, advancement opportunities and high wages.”
