Does anyone stay in hotels anymore? As the popularity of vacation rental sites such as Airbnb, VRBO, and Homeaway, continues to rise, another booking company is ready to jump into what is quickly becoming a crowded marketplace.
Earlier this month, Spanish chain Room Mate launched Bemate.com, a private rental site that “fuses the freedom of a city apartment with the best facilities of the hotel.” Featuring 2,500 “handpicked” apartments, Bemate.com will offer accommodations in cities where Room Mate is already located including Barcelona, Madrid, Amsterdam, Florence, New York, and Miami. The apartments are said to include several high-end amenities such as 24 hours concierge service, luggage storage, tourist information, daily cleaning, and airport travel and rates are competitive.
Despite its solid inventory and cheaper options, HotelChatter.com says there is much room for improvement for the new site. Many of the hosts do not include their photos and none provided a profile. Additionally, the English version of the site was “patchy” and there is no explanation of how the concept actually works. Because the site is backed by Room Mate, however, HotelChatter.com claims it will give the new page a chance to work out the kinks – but added it won’t be booking a rental through Be Mate until then.
