When someone tells you they visited New York, chances are they were referring to the city, not another part of the state. Truth be told, I’ve never been anywhere in New York outside of the Big Apple but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to venture out to a place like White Plains, Albany, Cooperstown, or even Syracuse. If I do get a chance to check out the latter, I’m definitely stopping by a few of the places on the following list compiled by the folks at Breakthrough Design Shop. From the sound of it, Syracuse seems like a pretty sweet little city to visit.

  1. Visit Buttermilk Falls during the summertime (and stop at the “Books” barn along the way): According to Breakthrough Design Shop, this recommendation is three-fold: 1. Visit Buttermilk Falls and explore the trails and surrounding falls which literally look like buttermilk. 2. Stop at the red “Books” barn on Route 13 which holds a huge archive of books and literature. 3. Get a relaxing dinner anywhere outside in the Ithaca Commons area.
  2. Do the Cayuga Wine Trail: Hailed by Breakthrough Design Shop as “one of the absolute best (and most fun) things to do in NY”, the wine trail is a must for anyone visiting the Syracuse area. Taste wines, pick up a bottle, enjoy the drive with the windows down, take in the history and life of the area, and meet new people.
  3. Run, rollerblade, or bike around Onondaga Lake Parkway: This suggestion, which made the Breakthrough Design Group’s “Honorable Mention” list, is for active types who don’t mind a little pollution while getting in a workout. The spot also features volleyball and a skate park.
