Last week, seniors and disabled residents living in New Jersey received a bit of good news. According to a story by Andrew Kitchenman for NJSpotlight.com, the state of New Jersey is making it easier for the elderly and disabled to get managed care by increasing its “funding for long-term services and support outside of nursing homes” under the Medicaid Comprehensive Waiver.
Previously, the state had made it easier for residents to qualify for nursing homes than for home health care and assisted-living facilities. According to Kitchenman, the disabled and elderly simply subtract the cost of nursing homes from their incomes to determine their eligibility for Medicaid. Up until the approval of the waiver, those receiving home-based care and community services did not have the benefit of such a deduction.
Thanks to this latest piece of legislation, these residents can now deduct a portion of their income, which should make many more individuals eligible for Medicaid. Any monies deducted from the income would be placed in a bank account called a Miller trust which can only be spent on necessary and medical-related expenses (the rest is given to Medicaid).
To qualify for Medicaid, residents of the state of New Jersey must have an income of $2,163.60 or less per month. The new program will be retroactive to July 1st while the state finalizes the details of the program.
