You would think a state with warmer temperatures and a lot of sunshine such as Florida or California would top the list of healthiest places to live for folks over the age of 65. But you’d be wrong.
According to the latest report from the United Health Foundation, many of the healthiest places to live for folks over the age of 65 are states are north of Mason-Dixie line. The report, which examines data for physical inactivity, obesity, food insecurity, and poverty in ranking states for senior health, listed Minnesota number one overall followed by Hawaii, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts.
Minnesota’s strengths include a number one ranking for all health determinants combined as well as high marks for volunteerism, number of dental visits, prescription drug coverage, and quality of nursing home care among other factors.
According to a recent story in The Kansas City Star, this report is significant because one in eight Americans is age 65 or older and by 2050 that number is expected to double in size as more baby boomers become seniors. The least healthy state for seniors is Mississippi followed by Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
