Home of the “Happiest Place on Earth”, Orlando is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the U.S. According to a new study, however, it isn’t a popular spot for pedestrians. Of 30 metro cities located across the country, the city of Orlando ranked dead last in walkability.
The report, compiled by the George Washington University School of Business, argues that a city’s health, productivity, and quality of life is affected by its walkability. City leaders in Orlando, which ranked 24th in the last report in 2007, say they are working to “create more walkable corridors” and are beginning to shift their focus away from the vehicular model to “more urban centers with mixed uses,” according to a story in the Orlando Sentinel.
Despite finishing at the bottom of this year’s rankings, there is hope for the Central Florida city. Though currently the city ranks 30th, the report expects Orlando to rise to 18th over the next four years as more walkable communities such as Winter Park and Lake Eola-Thornton Park spring up.
Topping this year’s list of most walkable cities were Washington D.C., New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Seattle.
