High Cost of Living, Taxes Could Drive Seniors Out of New Jersey

As the rate of taxes increases and the cost of living continues to climb across much of the country, many people in the U.S. are concerned with not only when they will retire, but where. According to a new poll by Farleigh Dickinson PublicMind, the majority of non-retirees in the state of New Jersey fall into this category.

The poll, which surveyed nearly 700 New Jersey adults who are not yet retired, found that 52 percent of respondents said their plan to spend their “golden years in another state,” this according to a story in The Star-Ledger. Only 32 percent of those polled said they wanted to stay in New Jersey.

Of those who indicated they want to leave, 57 percent said it was because of the state’s high cost of living, including taxes. According to PublicMind’s poll director, non-retirees “are looking for places where they can stretch their dollar” and New Jersey isn’t as affordable as it once was. Other reasons cited for wanted to move include wanting to go somewhere warmer (15 percent) and wanting to join relatives (6 percent).
