- Japanese Friendship Garden: A symbol of friendship between Phoenix and her sister city Himeji in Japan, this 3.5-acre park features purple leaf plums, Japanese maples, evergreen pears, and “plenty of shady spots to take a zen moment.” Began in 1987, the park took 50 architects from Japan more than 60 trips to build.
- Tovrea Castle: Located just off the Loop 202, the Castle “looks like a wedding cake” and rests among cacti and whitewashed rocks. Constructed in 1928 by an Italian entrepreneur, the structure is named after meat-packing mogul Edward Tovrea who bought it for his wife in 1931. Tours of the building and the Carraro Cactus Garden are available throughout the year.
- Sunrise Trail at McDowell Mountains: Though the mountains sit in the middle of the city, they still provide the perfect escape and and areas of seclusion. The Sunrise Trail, one of the mountain’s most popular, stretches 4.4 miles with a 1,300 foot elevation climb – perfect for hiking.
- Arizona Science Center: Located downtown, the Arizona Science Center is jam packed with “exhibitions and activities to keep geeks of all ages occupied.” From the Dorrance Planetarium and interactive displays to anatomy activities and musical shows, the Arizona Science Center will keep you and your brain busy all day.
