Iowa Moving Company Tweaks Traditional Model, Finds Success

If you’ve ever had to move, I probably don’t need to tell you that it’s not the most pleasant experience in the world. In fact, it flat out sucks. Whether you are hiring a moving company or renting a truck and recruiting the help of family and friends, moving can be both expensive and exhausting. Launched in 2009 by a former finance officer with Wells Fargo as a part-time venture, Iowa Moving 1 has tweaked the traditional moving company model, offering only labor instead of full-service moving services . Founder Eric Lloyd and his team of more than a dozen employees, help individuals, families, and other customers load and unload their rental truck, trailer, or storage container and, according to a story in The Des Moines Register, the company also provides in-house moves and packing services and sells moving supplies.

According to Lloyd, Iowa Moving 1 can help customers save up to 40 percent off the cost of moving with a traditional full-service moving company. Lloyd says that his target demographic are people between the ages of 30 and 50 – individuals who are old enough to drive a rental truck but just don’t want to deal with the hassle of moving furniture up and down stairs or unloading and loading heavy boxes. Lloyd also says that most of his customers are cost-conscious and don’t want to spend money on a full-service moving company when they have a truck themselves or have access to a cheaper rental.

The business, which hits its peak during the summer months, currently has a 94 percent customer satisfaction rating and serves the Des Moines metro area.
