Well, it’s not the first boat-sharing business to hit the water, but the founders of BoatSetter are confident their company can separate itself from the rest. Introduced at the Miami International Boat Show earlier this month, BoatSetter is a peer-to-peer boat rental service that connects boat owners with clients looking to spend some time out on the water.

Based in Miami, BoatSetter is the first rental marketplace that offers a “robust network of captains to would-be renters.” Owned by a group of marine executives, the company will first roll out the service in South Florida before moving forward with plans to launch in other areas of the country. In all, there over a dozen companies in the growing boat-sharing industry in the U.S.

Like its predecessors, BoatSetter allows boat owners to create a rental listing for their boat complete with pictures and information on amenities and other features. After a would-be boater locates the watercraft they’re looking for, BoatSetter handles the transaction from start to finish. Included in the total rental cost is insurance, on-water support, and the company’s 20 percent commission.

What sets BoatSetter apart from its competitors, however, is the company’s plan to offer renters the option of hiring licensed captains. For a few hundred dollars extra per day, boaters can hire captains to take the wheel and serve as a personal tour guide. To date, nearly 1,000 captains have signed up on the company’s portal. Currently, there are 13 marinas in the South Florida pilot program as BoatSetter works to expand its network nationwide.
