Haven’t booked your stay at that summer vacation rental yet? You might want to soon, according to the experts at TripAdvisor who recently announced the results of its fifth annual vacation rental survey. In all, 52% of the over 1,100 U.S. respondents said they plan to stay at a vacation rental in 2014, up eight percent compared to those who stayed in a rental last year.

Respondents cite more living space (67%), lower rates than hotels (53%,), and better amenities (50%) as the top reasons for choosing a vacation rental over a hotel stay. In regards to popular U.S. destinations, 33% of those polled plan on traveling to the Southeast while 15% and 11% are headed to the Northeast or Southwest and Hawaii, respectively. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, 32% will stay at a rental outside of the U.S. in 2014.

The top three settings for vacation rentals in the New Year are the beach (65%), city (27%), and the mountains (18%) and expectedly, summer is the most popular season for rentals.

According to the survey, the majority of respondents expect to pay between $100 and $200 per night for a rental and cite an amazing view or a private beach as a preferred luxury amenity.
