Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple years, you’re probably aware of the boom in popularity of bike sharing and rental programs across the U.S. From Portland to New York City, many businesses, organizations, and cities have implemented pedal-friendly programs to encourage employees, visitors, or residents to ride to get around.
One example of these programs was recently launched at the Hotel Palomar in Phoenix, Arizona. Under the direction of parent company Kimpton Hotels – which began offering specialty bicycles by Public to rent at all of its properties in early 2013 in an effort to promote cycling and wellness – Hotel Palomar kicked off its program last fall. To help its guests better explore the city of Phoenix, the hotel also distributes a pocket square bike map which highlights popular restaurants, museums, and parks in the city. The map also lists the locations of bike racks and family-friendly spots around Phoenix.
Popular with guests, the maps have also gained the support of local cycling organizations in the Phoenix area, including Phoenix Spokes People, who feel the hotel’s map set it apart from other hotels that simply rent out bikes but don’t provide guests with routes. To help mark the program’s debut, the hotel hosted a party that including free bike tune-ups and a community ride back in October.
