Take a Little Break from the Cold and Catch Some Baseball

With sub-zero temperatures expected to roll in this week, most of us here in the Midwest can’t help but daydream about the hot and sunny days of summer. If you’re suffering from cabin fever, why not head out a little trip this spring to watch your favorite baseball team in action? Spring training is just a few short weeks away and watching a few games under the sun in Florida or Arizona is the perfect way to get a little break from the (brutally) cold weather here at home. To help you plan your trip, here are a few basics on spring training from the folks at FamilyVacationCritic.com:

  • The Leagues – Teams in the Grapefruit League play their games in Florida and fall under one of four hubs: East Coast, Central Florida, Southwest Florida, and Tampa. Some of the notable teams in the Grapefruit League include the Braves, who play their games at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Yankees (Tampa), Red Sox (Ft. Myers), and Tigers (Lakeland). Across the country in Arizona, the Cactus League spring training is much more compact, with many teams, including the Reds, Dodgers, Cubs, and Rangers, playing within an hour of Phoenix. If you’re a fan of the Rockies, White Sox, or Diamondbacks, you’ll be heading to Tucson to watch your team in action.
  • The Perks – Spring training games are often a fraction of the price of regular season contests (which means more money in your pocket for a nicer hotel, sightseeing, the beach, etc.) and the smaller ballparks allow you and the kids to get up-close-and-personal with some of your favorite players. Additionally, many teams offer spring training packages which include tickets, accommodations, shuttles, and other options like taking batting practice at the ballpark.
