If travelling to Hawaii for the holidays wasn’t expensive enough, you can now expect to drop a few extra dollars on a rental car when you get there as well. According to a new survey from CheapCarRental.net, rental car rates in Honolulu have risen strongly during the season and have skyrocketed on the islands of Kauai and Maui.
The survey reviewed the rental rates of a total of 30 popular U.S. destinations between December 23 and December 27. Of the top four spots, Hawaii grabbed three of them led by Maui at #1. During the week of Christmas, the average daily rate for a rental car in Kahului is $339, up 455% from the regular rate. Second on the list is Lihui in Kauai with an average daily rate of $272, followed by New York City at #3 at $120 per day. Holding down the fourth spot is Honolulu, the third and final Hawaiian destination on the list, with an average daily rate of $114.
Rounding out the top 10 are Philadelphia ($107), West Palm Beach ($105), Boston ($101), Jacksonville ($83), Miami ($80), and Tampa ($76). The cities with the highest overall rate increases outside of Hawaii are West Palm beach (+264%), Tampa (+261%), and Miami (+158%).
