Earlier this summer, JT’s Grommet Island Beach Park and Playground For EveryBODY celebrated its three-year anniversary. The park, which opened in May 2010, was the first fully handicap accessible oceanfront park in the country. A Park for EveryBODY Built in honor of Josh Thompson, a surfer who grew up in Virginia Beach and later was diagnosed with ALS. The park features wheelchair accessible entrances, raised sand tables for sandcastle building, a sway board, and a sensory board for children who are autistic or visually impaired.

The 15,000 square foot beach park also features dolphin, surfboard, and wave sculptures and accessible umbrella-covered seating areas. The park, located near Rudee Inlet, is open year round. My son has MS and we visit JT’s at least once a summer. It a great place and he loves it. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood!
