Since its launch in the early part of the summer, Citi Bike has signed up more than 100,000 members in New York City according the NYC’s Department of Transportation. A bike sharing system, Citi Bike is intended to provide residents and visitors to New York with an additional mode of transportation and is available for use 24 hours per day.

Unfortunately, up until late July, renters had to bring along their own helmet or take the risk of riding without one. That’s when Bike and Roll NYC, another bike rental company, stepped up to the plate. For $3 per day or $15 per week, users of Citi Bike (or anyone willing to sign a waiver) can rent a sanitized helmet from Bike and Roll.

According to a story in gothamist, the helmets are sporty-looking Trek Bontragers and are thoroughly sanitized with Lysol and an all-purpose cleaner after each use. Additionally, the helmets will also be inspected for cracks by the Bike and Roll staff to make sure they are safe before being rented out to another rider. If a helmet does not pass inspection, it will be replaced. According to the company’s president, Bike and Roll will probably replace 80 percent of its helmets over a 12 month period.

Currently, the helmets are available at 10 locations around New York City, including near Brooklyn Bridge Park, Central Park, Battery Park, and Pier 84.
