One of America’s most popular tourist destinations, Washington DC has also been hailed as one of the most accessible cities in the world for those with disabilities . From parking to public transportation, the nation’s capital makes it easy for all individuals to navigate through the city and see some of our country’s best known landmarks and attractions.

Park It

In regards to parking, the DC Department of Motor Vehicles honors handicap parking permits from other states and in March 2012, DC established the Red Top Meter program to reserve curbside parking spaces to be used exclusively by persons with disabilities.

Metro for Those On the Go

Prefer to use public transportation? DC offers several perks. Travelers with disabilities looking to take advantage of the city’s Metro service can obtain a Metro Disability ID card that entitles the holder to discounted fares on Metrobus, Metrorail, MARC trains, and several other systems. Additionally, DC also offers MetroAccess, a shared ride, door-to-door, transit service from 5:30 a.m. to midnight.

Worried about gaining access to your favorite monuments or popular tourist spots? Don’t be. All Smithsonian museums in DC are wheelchair accessible and special tours for those with disabilities can be pre-arranged. Additionally, all of the memorials in DC, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and The National Theater are equipped to accommodate visitors with disabilities.
