New York City to Step Up Security for Iconic Marathon

New York Marathon Beefs Up Security

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, one of the most horrific acts of terrorism on American soil since 9/11, race and city officials in New York are working together to improve security measures for the 2013 New York City Marathon. Due to the fact it is nearly impossible to protect every corner of the race course, security experts recommend securing the portions of the course most susceptible to attack, including the start and finish lines and grandstands, while using searches and other techniques to minimize risks in other areas.

Making Safety Priority #1

With several months to prepare for November’s race, the mayor’s office, NYPD, and race organizers continue to make adjustments to security plans to ensure the nearly 60,000 registered runners and two million spectators remain safe.

In 2001, law enforcement officials began running security checks on all participants, volunteers, coaches, and reporters. The city also enlisted the Coast Guard to patrol the harbor, removed trashcans from the route, and placed police on rooftops overlooking the course in years past. Additionally, the city is considering asking participants to place all belongings in clear bags and considering an increase in random searches.

Although the threat of terrorism will always exist, those connected to the marathon believe a collaborative approach will be most effective in preventing an attack.
