Students Build Benches for Bus Riders, Don’t Take ‘No’ Sitting Down

To make a meaningful impact, one must do two things: Identify an issue and create a solution. In the spring of 2013, two students from the Detroit Enterprise Center set out to adopt a bus stop after witnessing an elderly woman standing in line for long period of time while waiting for her bus. The bus stop is one of several in the city of Detroit that fails to offer riders – many of whom are elderly – benches to sit on while they wait. Identifying a need, the students rounded up some classmates to build a homemade bus stop bench, complete with a built-in bookcase, using reclaimed wood and other materials.

Have a Seat

Shortly after construction was complete, the Detroit Department of Transportation claimed the crew failed to get city approval for the project and notified the group that the bench would be removed. Undeterred by the directive, the students have built a second bus bench and have plans to construct a third. The students say they have received nothing but positive feedback from the community and were even given one donation to continue the project. When asked about the benches, one member of the crew said, “We’re just trying to help.” We can go along with that.
