Datex-Ohmeda, a leading supplier of anesthesia and medical monitoring technology for hospitals worldwide, approached Design Concepts to design a compact anesthesia system that meets the changing needs of clinicians.

The Design Concepts team observed anesthesiologists at work to better understand user needs. Industrial designers and Datex-Ohmeda staff worked closely to improve ergonomics and develop a bold, contemporary visual style to challenge the conventional aesthetic of medical equipment. Mechanical engineers and prototype specialists demonstrated the ideas with full-scale visual models to assess both aesthetics and usability.

Two different machines were designed, the S/5 Aespire and the Avance, using a single platform. The machines share the majority of parts, but offer distinctly different technological advances. The units' form and styling directly address the need for a compact, more mobile workstation that combined the performance of Datex-Ohmeda’s already existing ventilator and patient monitoring system. The intuitive arrangement, large work surface, cable management, integrated illumination and ample storage area help save time and effort throughout the anesthesia care process. The anesthesia machines convey a modern, clean appearance that redefines the look of medical equipment.

The anesthetic machine or anesthesia machine is used by anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and anesthesiologist assistants to support the administration of anesthesia. The most common type of anesthetic machine in use in the developed world is the continuous-flow anesthetic machine, which is designed to provide an accurate and continuous supply of medical gases, mixed with an accurate concentration of anesthetic vapour, and deliver this to the patient at a safe pressure and flow. Modern machines incorporate a ventilator, suction unit, and patient monitoring devices.
