Fly the Coop from Typical Tedious Airplane Rentals

Small Aircraft

There are plenty of people that enjoy flying an airplane so much they go as far as getting their pilot’s license. Enthusiasts that wish to fly as a hobby versus a profession probably can’t justify the cost of buying an airplane just to sail the skies every now and then.

Besides the obvious expense for the purchase of the airplane, you also require a location and a means to house the plane. And when you do plan to take it up, up, and away, you gotta pay for the fuel to get it off the ground. Then, of course, there’s required maintenance, safety checks, and so on. I’m certain you get the point by now. You know who else gets the point? OpenAirplane.com, your one-stop rental shop for renting an airplane when you need it.

No Hidden Baggage with OpenAirplane

OpenAirplaneConvenience, savings, and fun – that’s what you’ll get when you rent a small plane through OpenAirplane. Membership is free, and as long as you have a valid pilot certificate, renter’s insurance, and fulfill a few simple requirements, you can easily use your computer, mobile phone, or tablet to locate a rental plane from numerous bases across the country.

Similarly, there is no cost to list if you are a aircraft operator with available planes for rent. Currently, OpenAirplane operates out of airports in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Jose, Kissimmee, and Detroit, but plans to expand are up in the air.

OpenAirplane is committed to helping you find, book, fly, and pay for your aircraft rental with ease. Added perks include the opportunity to earn discounts and save you money on your renter’s insurance, alerts regarding re-certification deadlines, and the ability to rent an aircraft as simply as you would rent a car.

ZBoard Could Be the Next Craze for Commuters

ZBoard Image

Step aside, Segway. What began as a mechanical engineering project for two seniors at the University of Southern California in 2009 has quickly generated major buzz across the country. Heralded as the “Skateboard of the Future” by Forbes magazine, the ZBoard is an electric skateboard that responds to a rider’s weight distribution. The ZBoard’s deck is equipped with both front and rear foot pads that enable the rider to accelerate or brake, as well as off-road wheels and a built-in handle for convenience.

Lean, Mean, and Green

Considered a green product, the ZBoard has an electric motor that gets a carbon footprint equivalent of up to 1,500 miles per gallon and the product’s modular design makes it simple to swap in and out parts. The ZBoard can also travel across most urban terrain at a top speed of 17 miles per hour and can climb small and medium hills, especially when it gets a rolling start.

Currently, there are three ZBoard models on the market – Classic, Pro, and San Francisco Special – ranging in price from $649-$1,199 and backed by a 90-day limited warranty. The ZBoard can support riders up to 225 pounds and can be fully recharged in just five hours. Although the ZBoard will not roll as well as a standard skateboard, it will roll. However, unlike its non-motorized counterpart, the ZBoard isn’t completely waterproof and shouldn’t be ridden in the rain.

Launched in 2012, the ZBoard is still new to the market but demand is growing. For those looking for an alternative way to commute to work – or heck, tour a city – the ZBoard is a fun and eco-friendly means to get around town. The best part? You won’t look like a mall cop while riding it.

Get Up and Out During National Fitness & Sports Month

As summer kicks off with Memorial Day festivities, the season is set for Americans, who will be outside enjoying the warm weather by engaging in fitness and recreational activities.

President Barack Obama has declared the month of May National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition has teamed up with public, private, and non-profit sectors in a nationwide effort to encourage Americans of all ages to engage in 30 minutes of physical activity a day.

Getting Fit Across America

The main goal is to introduce the virtues of living a healthy lifestyle through nutrition and exercise: the outcome being an educated and vigorous public.

The health of Americans has become an increasingly pertinent topic in the national dialogue, especially  in regards to the youth population. One in three children in America are obese or over-weight. This fact alone has become driving force behind the Let’s Move! campaign, which has received support and energy by First Lady, Michelle Obama.

The concerted efforts of community leaders and political figures have led to some progress in physical activity and nutrition awareness since the health initiative was set in motion three years ago.  In a prepared statement, President Obama stresses that although progress is being made, as a collective society it’s too early to become complacent.

The President of the United States on Staying Active

President_Barack_Obama_2012_portrait_crop“With simple steps, all of us can make physical activity a way of life. This month, we recognize Americans who are choosing that future for themselves and inspiring others to do the same. We also take this opportunity to renew the call to action. I encourage business, faith, and community leaders to uphold physical activity as an important way to enrich our neighborhoods. I call on schools to make good health and exercise part of a good education. And alongside our friends and family, let each of us recommit to leading a healthy, active lifestyle, and setting our children on the path to a bright future.”

- President Barack Obama

My First Week as a Rent It Today Employee

RIT Funny Staff Picture

Les, Tiana, Patrick, and Jason of Rent It Today

Opening  the glass entry door and walking across the threshold, I’m swiftly attacked by an average sized, four legged creature with black hair, sharp white teeth and dark eyes. Startled, I nearly trip backwards into the closed door when I realize this ball of energy is a Labrador of some sort – most certainly a young pup. “What is a dog doing in the building?”, I ask myself.

I courteously pet him and wipe a bead of sweat off my brow. Today is mildly hot and the sun is beaming down. The air conditioner in the Jeep is out and has been out since last summer, but that’s another worry for another time.

“Hi, you must be Kyle?” asks a young woman with dark hair and a bright smile.

Just as I begin to reply, a youthful man with lively eyes and a buoyant smile approaches me and extends his hand in a friendly manner, almost as if we were old pals.

“Hello Kyle, I’m Ray, we talked on the phone” he said, “nice to meet you!”

Not Your Typical Office Space

RIT Costume Day

Costume Day

Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when I first met with the staff of Rent It Today (RIT), but it was understood that whatever the work environment would be like, it wouldn’t be entirely dull or mundane like other office jobs I’ve heard about. When I began my official work week, these notions were perpetuated and sealed in my mind’s eye.

The pleasant manner of the RIT “cast” is straightforward and disarms potential awkwardness by being awkward (I mean this flatteringly). Referring to the staff as a “cast” works allegorically because in many ways, RIT represents an ensemble of characters in its own show. In addition to the personalities that make up the RIT family, the house itself plays a part. Each room of the house is as unique as those who occupy them. Family is a fitting word when describing the social nature of RIT because there’s a camaraderie only found in the closest of families. Often times, the jokes and sarcastic barbs thrown back and forth between veteran employees resemble the verbal volleyball found in a fraternity house.

All Kidding Aside

Rent It Today Call CenterAs I learn more about the vision laid out by RIT founders Matt and Jason, the clearer their objective becomes. At first, I was slightly confused by what the exact function of RIT was. Did it rent the actual items? I learned early on this question is asked incessantly in the call center, where employees respond with: “We don’t house or store the actual items but we can direct you to a company that does.” It led me to think maybe this one line of dialogue could be recorded and used for callers on hold; nevertheless, the call center manages to break the ice with callers.

From what I’ve observed in one week as a content writer, there’s an indelible human element to the RIT experience. It’s an element that’s noticeably absent from much of the modern corporate world. Many of today’s Fortune 500 companies  are struggling to identify with their employees’ personalities. Some work environments are stuffy and leave the staff relentlessly anxious in a sprawling office space of endless cubicles, but RIT strips down that veneer in a folksy and honest entrepreneurial fashion that only a small business could deliver.

Kyle Sebree

Call Center Rookie

Using the unvarnished template of Zappos.com as inspiration, Jason has managed to pull together a motley crew of personalities who let their character surface in the workplace while bringing their work ethic to the table. This freedom is critical because it allows room for polite objection, new ideas and growth – both financially and philosophically.

Bridging the Gap

Should you need a knee walker for your gymnast daughter who sprained her ankle in practice or an affordable  PA system rental for your first concert at the local tavern, I encourage you to contact Rent It Today and have a friendly exchange with one of the call center operators. Just remember one thing: we don’t house nor do we store rental inventory but we can certainly connect you with those who do, and we will be happy to do so.

‘Beardvertising’ Could Help Hipsters Pull in a Paycheck

Congratulations, hipsters. The creative minds at Cornett-IMS have come up with a way for you to get paid for your gift of facial hair. Based in Lexington, Kentucky, the ad agency is offering $5 per day to any man willing to hang an ad in their beard. The “beard-vertising” campaign was designed for A&W Root Beer and is open to any man looking to make money using what Whit Hiler of Cornett-IMS calls his “mancessory”. Hiler claims the company has received a huge response from men looking to host beardboards and has been in talks with other brands that want to become beardvertisers. From Brad Pitt to corporate big shots, it seems as though everyone is embracing the beard these days.

Although beardvertising is an original concept, it isn’t the first time individuals have been willing to sell their body parts for money. Earlier this year, Vice Media published a story on Andrew Lardinois, a 33-year old tax professional from Portland, who gets paid for shaving the logos of local businesses into his hair. And who could forget the man who had the Romney-Ryan logo tattooed on his face during the 2012 presidential campaign only to have it removed after the election? Gotta get that paper I suppose.

So far, Cornett-IMS hasn’t been able to measure what the campaign has meant for A&W’s bottom line, but it sure has people talking. From the Huffington Post to Japan’s AdGang, media outlets and blogs all over the world have picked up the story. If I could grow a beard, I would milk this opportunity for all its worth.

Just Another Day in the Office at Rent It Today

Excelent Customer Service

“Core Values”- You‘ve likely heard the phrase, but do you really know what they are, and does anyone actually have them? If you work at Rent It Today, the answer to both is a resounding “YES!”

On the walls of our building, on banners in different rooms, within every policy and procedure manual, and below this sentence, you will find Rent It Today’s core values.

  • Evolving the Renting World
  • Promoting Enjoyable Experiences
  • Empowering Both Customers
  • Creating Quality Content
  • Making Renting Simple
  • Loving Renting

These words are so important and powerful around here, I almost feel as though I’ve just shared some secret society initiation ritual.

Above and Beyond

If you were to step foot in our office at any given time, you’d see each and every one of us carrying out one or more of these core values. I’d like to share an example of one of our employees, Les Courtney, exemplifying exactly what I mean.

First, a little background…Les has been with Rent It Today for over five years. He has worked in just about every department, and currently assists customers in our new call center.

Great IdeaLes recently took a call from Beth Brooks, the Project Coordinator of Added Value, a brand development and marketing insight consulting agency. She was looking to rent two specific motorcycles for a photo shoot for approximately four days in both Park City, NJ and Anaheim, CA. Les’ training led him to finding local providers of motorcycle rentals in each city, but none had both motorcycles in stock at the same time. Eagle Rider, out of California, offered to locate dealerships in their area, set up an agreement, then rent to Ms. Brooks as a third party. It was then that Les’ lightbulb went off!

Exceeding his typical responsibilities as a call center agent, Les hit the web, and began searching for dealerships in New Jersey. He eventually got in touch Dan, at Cross Country Cycle in Metuchen, NJ, not too far from the city in which the bikes were needed. After an explanation and discussion of Ms. Brooks’ request, Dan not only agreed to rent both specific motorcycles for the photo shoot, but also offered delivery. Not only did Les go above and beyond, but the fine folks at Cross Country Cycle did, too!

No Profit to Us

Rent It Today did not, and does not, profit from connecting the renter and the rentee. Therefore, nothing tangible was earned by Les’ actions. What Les did earn, however, is the appreciation of all parties involved and the satisfaction of, in his words, “just doing what Rent It Today does – Making Renting Simple!”

Top Oddball Excuses Landlords Hear When Tenants Don’t Pay the Rent

Stop Making Excuses

Excuses, excuses. They didn’t work in school. They didn’t go over well with the parents. They don’t fly at work, and they certainly aren’t gonna make a bit of difference to your landlord.

A survey in Scotland came up with a top ten list of crazy excuses tenants have given as to why they couldn’t pay the rent. You can read the full story for the entire list, but I’ve chosen to share my three personal favorites with you.

“I have a phobia about touching my checkbook.”

Phobias come in all shapes and sizes. I’m not going to argue anyone’s issues, because I’ve got some doozies of my own. I won’t go into detail, but if you wanna watch a grown woman pass out, put a Popsicle stick or wooden spoon in my hand.

This tenant may have legitimately had a phobia connected to germs that hindered her from paying the rent.  Or maybe it was a fear of bouncing things, like checks.

“My pet died and I have to pay the funeral costs.”

I totally get this one. When my sweet kitty Ti-Jo passed when I was in college, I wore black for a month. My parents wouldn’t let me get him stuffed, so I did the next best thing so he could stay with me forever and had him cremated. Although I did not hold a funeral per se, I definitely broke the bank with the memorial shrine, antique fur holder, professionally framed pictures, hand-painted sweatshirt, and cedar engraved urn that I purchased.

So I’m certain if this tenant’s pet really did die, and she cared for it in the least, she spent a good deal of money memorializing it and truly couldn’t pay the rent. Side note – shoot me a message if you want an extended laugh about the engraving on my cat’s urn, and why it may have cost more than typical engravings.

“The money fell out of my pocket.”

Unless you purchased them in the 80′s, gone are the days of the “Mom jeans.” Since many of us refused to succumb to the horror of  wearing them, denim companies had no other choice but to respond. Sadly, they did so by designing jeans for 40 year olds the same as my 4 year olds. Not only do they barely cover our “assets,” but the slit in front formerly known as a pocket no longer exists. Instead, in its place is a seam that looks like it should be able to hold my Chapstick, but is really only a decorative stitch at most that is clearly only there to accentuate my child-bearing hips.

So yes, I absolutely believe this tenant lost the rent money so long as she is a woman, a Mother, and not wearing Jordache.

So there you have it – my top three of the survey that took place in Scotland. Your thoughts? Are you a landlord that has heard a good one or two? If so, please share below!

Evolving the Rental Industry Nets Second Consecutive Award.

Cincy Magazine held its fourth annual Tristate Success Award luncheon at the Sharonville Convention Center, Tuesday, April 9, 2013. Rent It Today was among 49 Greater Cincinnati companies honored at the ceremony. It marked the second consecutive year Rent It Today was recognized.

The Cincinnati metropolitan area’s strength as a thriving business center is built on the growth and success of its businesses. Based on this premise, the Tristate Success Awards were instituted to honor local companies which have grown in revenue and employees despite an uncertain economic climate.

dunnhumbyUSA CEO Cites Loyalty in Keynote Address

In his keynote address, dunnhumbyUSA CEO Stuart Aitken outlined how his company has achieved the success which allowed his firm to recently begin construction of a new four-story corporate headquarters in downtown Cincinnati.

Aitken stressed identifying and rewarding loyal customers as a cornerstone of dunnhumbyUSA’s corporate strategy as well as clients like The Kroger Company, Macy’s, Coca-Cola, General Mills, and Proctor & Gamble.

Aitken has adopted the same ‘success through loyalty’ approach in fostering relationships with dunnhumbyUSA employees, creating a work environment which has landed his company on the Cincinnati Business Courier’s “Best Places To Work” list four times.

400+ In Attendance

In addition to giving the 400+ attendees a chance to reflect on their accomplishments, the event also served as a forum to connect with other decision makers on the issues which face the region.

NBC affiliate WLWT Channel 5 news anchor Courtis Fuller repeated his 2011 role as event emcee.

Tristate Success Award

For Rent It Today, being a recipient of the prestigious award for the second straight year serves as verification the company is headed in a positive direction. The rental industry marketing company has added significant staff in the past year to support its growing client base as well as its new Call Center.

“The future is indeed bright here at Rent It Today,” said founder and CEO Jason Glass. “I felt Stuart Aiken’s keynote address resonated with our own growing focus in identifying and rewarding loyal customers.  It simply reinforces the desire to continue on that path.”

Rent It Today has seen continuous growth since Glass and Matthew Stephenson founded the company in 2007. More and more consumers as well as businesses realize the value of rental, making it a trend which shows no signs of slowing. The site has had over one million unique visitors each of the last two years.

RelayRides Makes Running Errands Easier for Urbanites

RelayRides Image

A little over two years ago, I made the decision to sell my car and move into the city. I wanted to move closer to my job at a small marketing firm downtown and rid myself forever of car payments, repair bills, $40 fill-ups, and insurance premiums. Fortunately, I was able to find a home about six city blocks from our office and within walking distance to everything I would need. Well, everything except a grocery. Sure, I’ve been able to bum a ride or borrow a car from a friend when I’ve needed to fill the fridge, but I don’t always want to wait on others to get across town. With RelayRides, I don’t have to.

A Nationwide Network

Launched in March of 2010, RelayRides connects car owners with users who’d like to rent a vehicle for a day, a week, or even an hour. Currently, cars in the RelayRides network are available in over 1,300 cities and towns across the United States. To protect car owners, RelayRides offers a $1,000,000 limited liability insurance policy and screens each renter against strict eligibility criteria. RelayRides also ensures renters are protected by providing a choice of three different insurance packages, car standards and reviews, and 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance and customer support.

How It Works

Listing and renting a car on RelayRides is simple. In just a few, short minutes, owners can create a profile online and list their vehicle for rent. Renters looking for a car can filter by features, types, and recent reviews to find the perfect vehicle. Once a renter makes a selection, the owner is notified and has the option of approving or denying the reservation request. Once a reservation has been confirmed, the owner meets with the renter to hand over the keys and wish them safe travels. At the end of the trip, the renter refills the tank and returns the car to the owner. It’s that easy.

Want to earn a little extra cash by renting your car or need a set of wheels to take a day trip? Visit RelayRides today!
