Even Superheroes Get Super Tired – Treat Your Mom this Mother’s Day

Mom Tattoo

Research has shown the absolute minimum resources necessary for physical well-being include meeting three traditional basic needs: food and water, shelter, and clothing. This may be true for some, but for mothers, it couldn’t be more inaccurate. If that really was the case, our great planet would be pretty scarce of Mamas.

  • Became a MomI am a Mother. Since becoming responsible for keeping two humans alive, the only food that I’ve consumed has been quickly prepared and eaten cold. I drink more wine than water, mostly because…well, I have children.
  • My shelter is overcrowded with princess everything, board games that take too damn long to play without cheating, and a whole bunch of little trinkety toys that seek out my bare feet and should be considered illegal.
  • As for my clothing – well, since having children, my size has changed, but my style hasn’t. If I’m not in “workout clothes” (that have never been through any form of workout), then you’ll find me squeezing into the same stuff I’ve worn for the past 10 years.Let me be clear, this is not by choice. First, I don’t have the time to go shopping, because I’m always taking care of my kids. And for anyone who just thought, “Just take them with you…” I’ll be dropping off my two year old son as you enter any facility other than a bouncy castle center. Second, I do not have the energy to go shopping, because I’m awakened throughout every night for a glass of water, a potty break, to comfort a nightmare, or check vitals of a sick kid. Third, I do not have the money to go shopping, because all my green goes towards more princess tiaras and death trinkets.

But guess what? I wouldn’t change my version of basic needs for anything.

Messy HouseMake Your Mum Feel Spavelous

This Mother’s Day, I don’t want a hot meal, new furniture, or even a pair of jeans that actually fit. I want quiet. I want pampering. I want to go to the bathroom by myself. None of these are possible at home. But they are feasible during a stint a day spa! (Notice, I said a day spa, and not a retreat or resort. Mama can’t be away from the nest for more than a few hours, unless she wants to return to a frazzled Daddy, a food covered toddler, a thousand Q-tips, diapers, cotton balls, forks, and some sort of goo strewn around the house, and a preschooler who found Mommy’s make-up.)

Here’s a list of some of the top day spas, per Spavelous.com, in the US that I’m certain would make your Mama smile.Superhero Moms

  1. Glen Ivy in California
  2. Hanalei Day Spa in Hawaii
  3.  27 Om Spa in New York
  4. Cape May Day Spa in New Jersey
  5. Scottsdale Spa and Holistic Massage in Arizona

To make Mother’s Day even more pampering and special for your personal lifeline, get her out of the minivan and into a hot ride that doesn’t remind her of Motherhood in the least. Even more, let someone else do the driving, and rent a limo for the day to pick her up and bring her relaxed and re-energized body home so she can get back to her daily job as a pro bono doctor, chef, entertainer, housekeeper, chauffeur, teacher, event planner, and handywoman – and those are just her accomplishments before 9am!

On The Road Again: Megabus Offers Low Cost Bus Service Across North America

Megabus Image

As gas prices continue to climb, many families have been forced to put annual vacations on hold. Road trips to Florida, the Grand Canyon, Lake Michigan, and other favorite destinations have been replaced by “staycations” or trips a little closer to home. Fortunately, thanks to Megabus, those on a tight budget can still afford to get away.

More Bang for a Buck

Launched in 2006, Megabus is the first low-cost express bus service to offer city-to-city travel for as little as $1 via the internet. The company has served over 22 million customers in more than 120 cities across North America including Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Philadelphia, New York, and Toronto. At the end of 2012, the company announced expanded express service to and from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and six other cities in California and Nevada.

Relax and Enjoy the Ride

Its fleet features luxury single and double deck buses offering free wi-fi, at-seat plug-ins, panoramic windows, restrooms, and a green alternative to travel. Megabus promises its buses are “meticulously maintained” and handled by “professional drivers” to ensure its customers enjoy a convenient, comfortable, and, most importantly, safe ride.

That’s the Ticket

Always looking to give back to their customers, the company offered 200,000 free seats for travel at the beginning of 2013. “A free ticket means there’s no reason to stay home, said Mike Alvich, Megabus.com’s vice president of marketing and public relations. “Megabus.com offers service to more than 120 cities in North America. That means there are millions of potential travelers that can use the free tickets to experience (our) service for the first time.”

This summer, skip the “staycation” and hit the open road with Megabus. You can leave your worries (and your car) behind.

For more information on Megabus and to purchase tickets, visit www.meagabus.com or call the company toll free at 1-877-GO2-MEGA.

Hotel Built to Five-Star Standards Using Shipping Containers

Shipping Container Hotel

Xiang Xiang Xiang Pray House

Located in Nan Dazhan Cun, a rural village on the outskirts of Changzhi city in China, the Xiang Xiang Xiang Pray House is a luxury hotel built to five-star standards using 35 new shipping containers. According to Meng Quingdong, the village governor and major player behind the project, Xiang Xiang Xiang Pray House was inspired by Japan’s earthquakes in 2011 and designed to be a boutique hotel.

In all, the hotel covers 5,000 square meters and has a total of 21 guestrooms. The three “Xiangs” in the hotel’s name stand for incense, container, and countryside (in order) and the container hotel stands within the compound of City God Temple, a major city for ceremonies in the city. The hotel has an incense theme and is decorated in a traditional Chinese style. Amenities include free incense, sachets, and a burner and the hotel also features a lobby, restaurant, and function rooms where guests can view tea ceremonies and concerts.

Designed by Beijing-based Tonghe Shanzhi Landscape Design Company, the containers were built in the seaside city of Dalian in northeast China before being transported and assembled in Changzhi. The entire process, from design to completion, took the company a total of three months. According to a main designer on the team, the construction of the Xiang Xiang Xiang Pray House saved approximately 60 percent in water and concrete consumption and produced only 30 percent of normal construction waste compared to normal hotels with the same number of rooms.

The hotel was scheduled to open in August 2012.

Discover the Beauty of Telluride During Your Colorado Ski Vacation

Mountains in Telluride

With a chill in the air and the first signs of winter hitting the ground, it’s time to plan a ski vacation! This year, when you think skiing, think Telluride.

The Secret Is Out

Telluride is synonymous with small town Colorado. Situated in a box canyon of the Southwest, you will find old fashioned heritage and culture combined with the modern conveniences and adventures to make this the perfect ski vacation destination. This is precisely why the area has a reputation for being Colorado’s best kept secret.

The region is no secret to Conde Nast Traveler magazine, however, which rated Telluride the “number one ski resort in North America” in 2012. With over 2,000 acres of powder and trails, and over 300 inches of snow per year, this premier resort town has something for every skier.

Skiing in Telluride

Skier enjoying the slopes of Telluride, ColoradoBeginning skiers have been known to enjoy the smooth runs of the trail named Galloping Goose. There, you can practice the basics of skiing and feeling comfortable on the snow in preparation for a more intermediate slope like See Forever. With a steeper terrain, you’ll be sure to polish up your skills to embark on the adventure that awaits you on the aptly named advanced ski trail, The Plunge. These are just three of the 125 ski trails you’ll find within the mountains of Telluride.

One of the many appeals of skiing in Telluride is the serenity and calmness of the environment. Although the area is quickly gaining popularity, the lift lines have a 22,000+ person per hour capacity, allowing them to remain uncrowded even during the peak season. Therefore, you can truly enjoy and get the most out of your time on the slopes, unlike other resorts where the wait to get up the hill is much longer than the amount of time it takes you to ski down.

As you are riding the lifts, sightseeing by foot, ice climbing, snow shoeing, horseback riding, or enjoying a trip on the famous free gondola connecting Telluride and neighboring Mountain Village, you’ll quickly note why SKI Magazine voted this beautiful area “number one in scenery.” From the wildlife to the wildflowers, professional and amateur photographers will find the area definitely picture-worthy, so don’t forget to pack your camera!

Where To Stay

Vacation Home in Telluride, COWhere you stay while on vacation can make or break the experience. A hotel may offer a bed and a place for your belongings, but a vacation rental provides the comforts of home. Lucky for you, there are options abound when it comes to Telluride vacation rentals, and Rent It Today can help you secure the perfect place for you and your fellow travelers.

Lake Cumberland Poker Run and Boating Events

Lake Cumberland KY Boating

Poker Run Weekend at Lake Cumberland KY

Lake Cumberland Poker Run

Not ready to end the party after Labor Day weekend? Then head over to Lake Cumberland, KY, and enjoy one of the mostly highly attended and entertaining boat races around, the Lake Cumberland Poker Run. The official web site of the Poker Run describes the boating event as “combining the raw fury of over 150 of the country’s meanest and fastest powerboats with the fun and energy of Mardi Gras.”

Each year, during the weekend following Labor Day, tens of thousands of spectators gather at Lake Cumberland to view what Extreme Boats Magazine has deemed “one of the top ten ranked poker runs in the country.” As a spectator, you will experience thrills and chills watching boats hit record speeds along the racing course. As a participant, you have the opportunity to score a monetary prize that ranges from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars. If you do not own a boat, the State Dock has you covered. They offer a variety of Lake Cumberland boat rental options, including houseboats for rent.

Poker Run Info

State Dock is where the event begins and the festivities take place. Here, you will find two docks. Both are typically used to moor over 80 houseboats, but during the Poker Run, one is designated solely as the parking spot for competing powerboats. The second dock, known as Houseboat Row, is where participants and spectators that are not “coved out” stay overnight, and enjoy an array of activities. Annual entertainment at State Dock during the Lake Cumberland Poker Run weekend typically includes at least one live band, lots of food, dancing galore, and enough fun to last you until the following year’s race. You can visit State Dock’s Facebook page for more information.

More About Lake Cumberland

Lake Cumberland during Poker Run WeekendThe 100+ miles of water and 1,200 miles of shoreline of Lake Cumberland are also home to year round events including a Kentucky Derby party, Memorial Day and Labor Day celebrations, the Blues, Boats, & BBQ Fest, and a number of different car shows and fundraisers. The area  is also a prime fishing, camping, hiking, and boating locale for any nature lover or person looking for a relaxing getaway.

After you’ve enjoyed all State Dock and nearby Jamestown Marina have to offer, you can stay a while longer and visit Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery. There are restaurants, shopping centers, and entertainment venues in nearby Somerset and Russell Springs. For example, did you know the Somerset-Pulaski County is home to one of the last original drive-in theaters in the US? Thrill seekers can get their excitement fix with a visit to Lake Cumberland Speedway or the Somerset Skateboard Park. History buffs can load up on knowledge with a trip to the Mill Springs Battlefield Museum, and the kiddos can enjoy 20 acres of aqueous adventures while at SomerSplash Water Park.

After all that fun, everyone deserves a good meal. Some of the more popular dining locations include Guthrie’s River House, voted Best Restaurant in the 2012 Reader’s Choice Awards, and Bread of Life Cafe, known for their home cooked fare and mission to support the less fortunate. Save room for dessert, though! You won’t want to miss out on a little piece of heaven from Simply Cupcakes of Somerset.
