Krueger may have passed in March, but this is not his obituary. Instead, it is the story of his revival back to life and the importance of having an automated external defibrillator (AED) available in every environment.

You can’t pick the time and place to have a heart attack. Matt Krueger can attest to that. During an interview, Krueger said “I felt perfectly fine that morning so you never know when you’re life can change in an instant.”

During a typical Saturday morning game of basketball with the guys at Christ Community Church in St. Charles, Krueger went into cardiac arrest. Due to the quick thinking of some fellow players, chest compressions were started, and the church’s defibrillator was fetched. Demetrio Torres, a police officer that was on the scene as a teammate, is credited for orchestrating the life-saving event in a calm and composed manner. His expertise and training allowed him to lead the teammates in responding appropriately, therefore saving a friend’s life.

This is just one of countless stories in which having an AED on-site meant Daddy will be coming home later instead of the ill-fated opposite.

Clothing, Gadgets, and Cars – Oh My!

Turns out a single stem rose and reservations at the city’s most expensive restaurant aren’t enough to woo the opposite sex on a first date in 2013. A recent study from the Hertz Corporation, one of the largest car rental brands in the world, found that nearly one-third of British men rent or borrow items to impress prospective partners. High-end clothing and accessories and fast cars – think Ferraris, not Fiats – top the list of most commonly rented or borrowed items which also includes homes, pets, and expensive gadgets.

Pathetic, right ladies? Apparently, not all of you think so. Findings from the same study revealed that about 20% of women also rent or borrow items to look the part. Additionally, 40% of women polled admitted the car a person drives can make them more attractive, while nearly 60% said they would be impressed by a well-dressed man – proof these blokes might actually be on to something. No wonder James Bond gets so much action.

All You Need Is Love. Or Were The Beatles Wrong?

Interestingly enough, the study also revealed this particular trend is most common among younger respondents. In fact, 40% of those surveyed between the ages of 18 and 25 admitted to renting or borrowing items to help close the deal. Maybe young people just don’t understand how love works. Then again, maybe the older folks learned a long time ago you could go broke using these tricks before you figure it out.

Lesson for the Day: Fake it ‘til you make it. Or you can take your chances with the flower and a table for two.

Comprehensive Analysis Helps Reduce Heavy Equipment Theft

Question: What do a riding lawn mower, a backhoe, and an excavator all have in common?

Answer: In 2010, they were amongst some of the most stolen pieces of heavy equipment in the industry.

Construction Equipment Theft: Who, How, & Why

The numbers regarding the amount of heavy equipment stolen over the course of a year are compiled from a variety of sources. Those include the National Equipment Register (NER), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).

During year 2010, 13,374 reports were made concerning heavy equipment theft. The information compiled in the reports was then used to conduct an extensive analysis. Based on the findings, officials were able to discuss and employ proactive measures in theft prevention. For example, by analyzing the data, NCIC was able to determine the top states in which the theft of heavy equipment was most prominent, therefore allowing them to put the appropriate procedures in place to deter such high rates. Some of those measures included regulation adjustments, as well as the installation of GPS tracking systems.

Statistics regarding heavy equipment theft in 2011 show a decrease by almost 2,000 reports. Further, the amount of items recovered after being stolen rose from 19% in 2010 to 21% in 2011. Specifics on the types and frequency of items taken in 2011 were not readily available. However, construction equipment theft remains an industry problem that rental suppliers, construction companies, and contractors must deal with.

Curious Minds Want to Know

The most stolen piece of equipment in 2010 was the riding lawn mower, at just under 50% of total reports made. In descending order, the top ten list included the tractor, skid steer, backhoe, forklift, excavator, generator, wheel loader, dozer, and the trencher.

As for the states experiencing the highest volume of heavy equipment theft 2010, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina ranked as the top three. During the year 2011, those three remained at the top of the list.
