Beach Rentals Can be the Cure to the Summertime Blues

Summer in the Sand

I can barely say the word “summer” before breaking into song and dance to “Summertime, Summertime” by the Jamies. I know…showing my age.

Regardless, I happened to glance at my calendar today and noted the official start of summer is this Friday, June 21st. As customary, I immediately began going through the aforementioned lyrics. Thankfully, to my co-workers, this was all taking place in my head.

I began wondering what other songs I could come up with in regards to the season change. The first few that came to mind were “Summer Nights” from Grease, “Surfin’ Safari” by the Beach Boys, and although it’s tough to admit, Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg’s “California Gurls.” As I was quietly humming each tune, I quickly noted a theme – the beach. It’s no surprise we associate the year’s sunniest and hottest season with the beach.

No More Lazy Days of Summer

Woman Writing Out ListThoughts of a beach vacation used to include a beach chair, a good book, and a bikini. This was all before I had children. Now, thinking of a beach vacation stirs up anxious feelings of everything I would need to pack to keep all of us entertained during our seaside venture. and so begins the dreaded list of things to pack…

The vision of one beach chair has turned into four and likewise with the towels. My daughter is five and my son is two. Neither are avid swimmers, so I certainly can’t forget to bring some life jackets. Also, based on their constant requests, my children apparently can’t go five minutes without snacks and drinks, so tack a cooler into that vision.  Being so young, their attention span is about the size of a grain of sand, so a bucket and a shovel are only going to entertain for a brief period. I’m thinking we’ll also need to tote along some games. Speaking of tote, I’m certainly going to need something – a wagon, perhaps – to carry all of our beach gear.

Put Down the Paper Bag

The word “impressive” doesn’t even begin to describe it. The largest privately-owned estate America, the Biltmore Estate covers over 8,000 acres and is just under 180,000 square feet in size. The Chateauesque-styled mansion was built by George Washington Vanderbilt II and features 250 rooms, a bowling alley, a two-story library, and a 70,000 gallon indoor swimming pool. The estate grounds, which at one-time were managed by Carl Schenck, the father of the forestry education program in the United States, includes 75 acres of formal gardens, a small walking trail, a winery, and a AAA Four-Diamond hotel complete with 213 rooms.

Biltmore Draws Big Crowds

Members of the family continued to live at the Biltmore House until 1956 when it permanently opened to the public as a home museum. In addition to the aforementioned attractions, the home museum also features several exhibits, pieces of art, a conserved 1913 Stevens-Duryea C-Six, and a large Tiffany collection.

In 2010, the family opened Antler Hill Village which includes an outdoor adventure center, creamery, tavern, and small museum. In all, the Biltmore Estate draws over one million tourists each year. Tickets for a self-guided visit of the house are less than $50 when purchased in advance and children under the age of 16 are free with an adult admission. Is Tent Camping Becoming Extinct?

If you’re over the age of 35, the word “camping” elicits memories of hiking into the woods among the natural habitat of the insects and the animals, pitching a tent, making a fire, and spending time with your fellow campers. As you roast marshmallows on sticks you found during your trek, you reminisce, sing, laugh, and simply live in the moment with each other.

Does a Kid Text in the Woods

Photo Courtesy disneyworld.disney.go.comQuite differently, if you try to talk camping with today’s youth, you may find yourself using words like “wi-fi” and “charging docks” and insisting it really is possible to make bacon without electricity. The essence of camping, of being one with the land and fellow human beings, has all but lost its true meaning. In recognition of National Camping Month, I would like to suggest a movement this June to bring back the good old days of rugged, wilderness, tent camping. Are you with me? Good!

Get Up and Out During National Fitness & Sports Month

Riding Bikes

As summer kicks off with Memorial Day festivities, the season is set for Americans, who will be outside enjoying the warm weather by engaging in fitness and recreational activities.

President Barack Obama has declared the month of May National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition has teamed up with public, private, and non-profit sectors in a nationwide effort to encourage Americans of all ages to engage in 30 minutes of physical activity a day.

Getting Fit Across America

The main goal is to introduce the virtues of living a healthy lifestyle through nutrition and exercise: the outcome being an educated and vigorous public.

The health of Americans has become an increasingly pertinent topic in the national dialogue, especially  in regards to the youth population. One in three children in America are obese or over-weight. This fact alone has become driving force behind the Let’s Move! campaign, which has received support and energy by First Lady, Michelle Obama.

The concerted efforts of community leaders and political figures have led to some progress in physical activity and nutrition awareness since the health initiative was set in motion three years ago.  In a prepared statement, President Obama stresses that although progress is being made, as a collective society it’s too early to become complacent.

The President of the United States on Staying Active

President_Barack_Obama_2012_portrait_crop“With simple steps, all of us can make physical activity a way of life. This month, we recognize Americans who are choosing that future for themselves and inspiring others to do the same. We also take this opportunity to renew the call to action. I encourage business, faith, and community leaders to uphold physical activity as an important way to enrich our neighborhoods. I call on schools to make good health and exercise part of a good education. And alongside our friends and family, let each of us recommit to leading a healthy, active lifestyle, and setting our children on the path to a bright future.”

- President Barack Obama

Get Fit With Rent It Today

GolfersAs temperatures rise and daylight lingers into the evening hours, the traditional American summer equates to riding bicycles, surfing the waves and swimming at the local pool. Summer creates options for fitness and exercise. Sports equipment rentals during vacation are invaluable to the national objective.

Marianne Linens Image

If you’re from the Midwest, you’ve probably packed up the car and headed south to Florida for a summer vacation at some point in your life. After the long drive down I-75, you hit the Florida state line and spend several more hours navigating through traffic until you finally reach your beachside condo. Instead of quiet beaches and a relaxing atmosphere, you find yourself lugging a beach bag and chair up and down the shoreline looking for a spot to start your vacation. After an hour of screaming children, ringing cell phones, and errant frisbees, you begin wondering if there’s a better place to spend a week away. There is.

Virginia is for More than Lovers

Located off Shore Drive, Chesapeake Bay is a beautiful and relaxing refuge along Virginia Beach. Featuring a quiet atmosphere and mild waves, Chesapeake Bay is the perfect spot to unwind and get away from it all.
