I can barely say the word “summer” before breaking into song and dance to “Summertime, Summertime” by the Jamies. I know…showing my age.
Regardless, I happened to glance at my calendar today and noted the official start of summer is this Friday, June 21st. As customary, I immediately began going through the aforementioned lyrics. Thankfully, to my co-workers, this was all taking place in my head.
I began wondering what other songs I could come up with in regards to the season change. The first few that came to mind were “Summer Nights” from Grease, “Surfin’ Safari” by the Beach Boys, and although it’s tough to admit, Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg’s “California Gurls.” As I was quietly humming each tune, I quickly noted a theme – the beach. It’s no surprise we associate the year’s sunniest and hottest season with the beach.
No More Lazy Days of Summer
Thoughts of a beach vacation used to include a beach chair, a good book, and a bikini. This was all before I had children. Now, thinking of a beach vacation stirs up anxious feelings of everything I would need to pack to keep all of us entertained during our seaside venture. and so begins the dreaded list of things to pack…
The vision of one beach chair has turned into four and likewise with the towels. My daughter is five and my son is two. Neither are avid swimmers, so I certainly can’t forget to bring some life jackets. Also, based on their constant requests, my children apparently can’t go five minutes without snacks and drinks, so tack a cooler into that vision. Being so young, their attention span is about the size of a grain of sand, so a bucket and a shovel are only going to entertain for a brief period. I’m thinking we’ll also need to tote along some games. Speaking of tote, I’m certainly going to need something – a wagon, perhaps – to carry all of our beach gear.

A Game Night Without “Bored” Games

Quite differently, if you try to talk camping with today’s youth, you may find yourself using words like “wi-fi” and “charging docks” and insisting it really is possible to make bacon without electricity. The essence of camping, of being one with the land and fellow human beings, has all but lost its true meaning. In recognition of National Camping Month, I would like to suggest a movement this June to bring back the good old days of rugged, wilderness, tent camping. Are you with me? Good!
