Denver Boom Lift Rental Safety-Rent Safe Fall Hazard Prevention

This fall hazard awareness construction work site safety update is sponsored by Rent It Today’s Rent Safe program and features Volvo Rents Denver construction equipment rental center in Longmont, CO and the Colorado Springs, CO construction equipment rental location - The Denver Scissor Lift Rental and Boom Lift Leasing Experts.

Boom Lift Rental Safety Precautions Prevent Fall Hazards

Safe Use of Aerial Boom Lifts Minimizes the Risk of Fall Hazards and Saves Lives

Boom lift rentals, scissor lifts, and man lifts are construction site staples, thanks to their ability to provide a stable aerial work platform that places workers in normally hard-to-reach areas where work must be done. With any type of construction work or heavy equipment use there are always hazards and risks involved. When it comes to renting aerial boom lifts and working at heights, fall hazards are the top safety priority.

Aerial Lift Fall Injuries PreventionThe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Construction Workplace Safety and Health division reported “according to the 2009 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 605 workers were killed and an estimated 212,760 workers were seriously injured by falls to the same or lower level. The highest frequency of fall-related fatalities was experienced by the construction industry (NIOSH Construction Fall Injuries Prevention in the Workplace).”

The great tragedy is that most, if not all, of these accidents could be prevented through proper training and by observing appropriate safety precautions.

Lanyards, safety harnesses, and/or full body harnesses should be worn at all times while working at heights. As with any motor vehicle, operators should perform a safety inspection prior to operation. Any worn or broken parts must  immediately be repaired or replaced. Tires must be in working order and all screws must be securely tightened to ensure the safe operation of the vehicle.

Safety Harnesses Prevent Fall Injuries while operating Scissor LiftsAerial lifts must be operated in a situations for which they were designed. Boom lift rentals should be  operated on level ground or inclines within their recommended safe ranges. Anything outside of that range could cause the lift to break free and roll or slide during operation. Additionally, workers should keep a look out for low-hanging wires or other overhead obstructions. Colliding with overhead structures can cause not only monetary damage but also severe injuries. Thorough training must be completed before operation. It might be tempting to pick up these skills on the job, but that’s how expensive and potentially life-threatening accidents occur. Common sense can save the day. If you’re planning to operate a vehicle, don’t do so until you’re adequately trained.

In order to successfully reduce the risks of fall hazards, fall injuries, and fatalities from falling regulators, manufacturers, construction equipment rental companies, contractors or employers, workers, safety professionals and researchers must work together. Only through collaboration and dedication to improving work environments by implementing new effective fall prevention and protection technologies and safety practices can the construction industry create a safer, more productive workplace.

Volvo L35B Compact Wheel Loader Safety and Maintenance

Whether its ink-less, crusty dry erase markers in an office or construction equipment with a completely empty fuel tank, nothing can make a job an annoying slog like poorly maintained tools. Not only does it hurt productivity, but in the case of construction, can actually be a huge security problem. Thankfully, high quality construction equipment from an equipment rental source is built with this in mind, which makes maintenance a breeze. Heavy equipment machines like wheel loaders are rented often and used for a variety of job site applications in rugged environments. The Volvo L35B compact wheel loader is an example of this – it absolutely needs regular maintenance like any piece of construction equipment rental does, but it’s built in such a way as to make that maintenance as easy to perform as possible.

Rather than squish and cram the machinery inside the engine compartment wherever it will fit, Volvo has taken care to position all the serviceable elements of the engine in easy reach. The most drastic (and undeniably coolest) feat of engineering for the sake of convenience is that the L35B loader’s engine is actually set on its side inside the engine compartment, which makes it much easier to work on. As a result, all the filters are right out in front as opposed to crammed up under the engine. This enables one to swap out filters without having to crawl on the ground and inevitably end up covered in motor oil. What’s more, all fluids are located within reach too. The diesel fuel reservoir, engine oil, and other essential fluids are all extremely easy to check and adjust, which ensures the equipment will always perform at top efficiency.

Of course, maintenance is only one aspect of proper heavy equipment rental use. The Volvo L35B compact loader also has a number of smart safety features to ensure the correct operation of the equipment in all situations. The equipment provides basic necessities like running lights that illuminate the work area in low-light conditions. A particularly innovative feature in the L35B wheel loader is a large pin that can lock the articulating hinge in the middle between the two wheel axles. I’m not in a rush to have a hand or a piece of clothing caught in that monster hinge, so that lock is fantastic for peace of mind while servicing the machine, or using it in a situation that doesn’t necessitate the articulation. Another great design decision by Volvo was to move the boom down in between the wheels. That means you’d have to go out of your way to come in contact with it during operation, and if you do that, you really have no one to blame but yourself for what happens.

From maintenance to operating safety, Volvo has developed a number of innovative features that make the L35B compact wheel loader rental an efficient piece of equipment.

Rent Quiet Emphasized at NIOSH Buy-Quiet Meetings

Construction equipment, industrial machinery, and power tools continue to evolve enabling people to accomplish jobs faster, more efficiently and safely. Demand for equipment designed to increase production and profit will always be a dominant market force within the manufacturing industry. Equipment design and functionality is also influenced by competitive forces driven by the need to develop machinery that can do more but cost less. Considering how powerful such economic influences are it is naive to think user safety is always the top priority when designing machinery.

Rent Quiet part of Rent It Today's Rent Safe Initiative

Renting tools and the construction equipment rental industry were brought to the forefront of related discussions in recent “Buy-Quiet” meetings hosted by The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). These meetings included global thought leaders working on the Buy-Quiet (BQ) initiative.

Buy-Quiet is both a call to action and program that is conceptually straight forward: give consumers the option to buy tools and equipment that produce less noise in order to help prevent hearing loss among workers using them. The broader focus of the BQ program involves increasing the demand for quieter machinery in order to influence manufacturers to produce it. Buy-Quiet (BQ) is a National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) jointly organized by the NORA Construction Sector and Manufacturing Sector Programs, and the NIOSH Hearing Loss Prevention Cross-sector Program.

Rent Quiet at RentItToday.comRenting or “Rent-Quiet” is inherently a concept of Buy-Quiet. The words buy and rent are interchangeable within the context of purchasing equipment relative to its use by consumers and workers.

In the case of noise exposure, hearing protection is certainly a valuable tool used to prevent hearing loss. However, a significant opportunity to bring about long term change in reducing noise exposure and thus hearing loss comes from “prevention through design” initiatives like Buy or Rent-Quiet.

If you are unable to eliminate hazards or remove workers from a dangerous environment the next course of action is to minimize the risk from exposure. Programs that offer resources to help people “Rent Safe” (a resource being developed by RentItToday.com for 2012) or more specifically Rent-Quiet are a viable way to bring safety awareness to the construction and manufacturing industries.

Try The Sound Meter at CDC.gov CLICK HERE

A recent article from the NIOSH science blog mentions some of the challenges that come with getting manufacturers to become vested in and prioritize the production of safer, quieter tools and machines. One sure-fire way to bring about change from equipment manufacturers is through influencing consumer purchasing decisions. How is consumer purchasing influenced with respect to buying quieter equipment?

One way is by developing resources that educate and bring awareness to consumers regarding noise levels associated with different types or models of machinery. Examples of such resources include the NIOSH Noise Meter which enables people to listen to different sounds and noise intensities of commonly used items while learning if they could cause hearing loss. Another example is the NIOSH Power Tools Database which enables one to compare the noise levels produced by different tools.

Ultimately if workers and consumers have access to resources that enable them to make informed decisions regarding how safe (or loud) the tools and machinery they rent are, one may increase demand for safer, quieter, equipment thus bring us full circle in the hierarchy of controls and eliminating the hazard.

Backpacking and Camping Gear Rentals Grow In Popularity

Camping Backpack Rental

As 21st Century lifestyles become more complex, the allure of camping, backpacking and the great outdoors is increasing. Camping is a fun, simple and affordable way to decompress as well as enjoy quality time with family or friends.  Pitching a camping tent, building a campfire, and kicking back under the star filled sky offers a throwback to a more primitive time and a relaxing escape from the increasingly urbanized world.

Outdoor enthusiasts range from the experienced backpacker who relishes hiking into undeveloped wilderness areas, to the Tenderfoot who has limited or no experience at tent camping. Whatever your level of experience, renting gear for camping and backpacking has become an increasingly popular option. Fuel costs make traveling light a priority, and flying to a destination makes transporting gear quite a task, if not an impossibility.

Unless you are a frequent camper or backpacker, investing in costly gear for only occasional use doesn’t make financial sense. You can save money by renting camping gear and using it just for as long as you need it. High quality, top-brand gear rental is available for less than you’d spend to buy and own inexpensive, low quality options. And gear rental also allows outdoor enthusiasts of every experience level the opportunity to ‘try before you buy’.

If you’re a new or relatively inexperienced camper or backpacker, outdoor equipment rental businesses can be a valuable preparation resource. Rely on their experience to ensure you get all the essentials you’ll need. They will answer any questions you may have and are happy to offer suggestions regarding your excursion. Whether you are renting or buying, selection of the right gear is important. Fit, strength, size, weight, length of trip, weather, experience and destination are all important factors to consider when selecting the gear that will work best for you.

Most camping and backpacking equipment rental dealers allow you to reserve online or by phone, and offer consultation and recommendations based on your itinerary.  Your gear is shipped so it arrives at your home the day before you leave on your trip, or at your destination the day before you arrive. Typically there is no additional charge for transit time. When you are finished with the equipment, you simply return it in the same packaging in which it was shipped by attaching a prepaid return shipping label, or following the instructions the dealer supplies with the rental. It’s not unlike renting a DVD online, just in a bigger package.

All in all, experienced outfitters are making rental of outdoor equipment for camping or backpacking uncomplicated and user focused. That’s why this type of rental is growing in popularity. Enjoying the great outdoors has never been easier.

Construction Equipment Rental Orlando FL

Anticipated demand for construction equipment rentals in Orlando, Florida has spurred major industry player Volvo Rents to acquire the Orlando based company Contractors Equipment Rental (CER). The acquisition allows Volvo Rents to continue expansion of its growing network of company-owned heavy equipment and power tool supply businesses throughout North America.

Orlando Backhoe Rental from Volvo Rents

According to Construction Equipment Distribution Magazine (CEDMAG), the construction industry in the Orlando and Central Florida areas are working through a challenging time right now, however the region’s long-term future holds promise.

Volvo Rents plans to capitalize on an increase in local construction spending estimated to approach $30 Billion between 2012 and 2016.

“Since 2002, when we initiated a relationship with Volvo Rents, I have had admiration for the integrity of the Volvo Rents management team and their commitment to local decision-making.  The company’s culture of taking care of our employees and customers made becoming part of Volvo Rents an attractive decision for my family and my employees,” explained Gary Tripp, owner of Contractors Equipment Rental. “Volvo Rents is embarking on a significant expansion, and we are looking forward to facilitating their growth.”

With the purchase of CER, Volvo Rents now operates four equipment rental locations in Florida including Port St. Lucie, Tampa, and Pompano Beach. Purchasing an established Orlando construction equipment rental location was a logical decision given the size of the Florida market. Additionally the acquisition of the Orlando location enables Volvo to effectively provide equipment rentals throughout the majority of Central and South Florida.

“Contractors Equipment Rental’s commitment to customer care and local decision-making has enabled the Tripp family to assemble an excellent team that is fully committed to VIP customer service,” said Mike Crouch, Vice President, Business Development. “Gary Tripp and team will serve a significant role in the expansion of Volvo Rents in the state of Florida.”

Volvo Rents now provides the entire Orlando metropolitan area with an extensive line of construction equipment rental options. Furthermore by offering a comprehensive selection of heavy equipment that includes backhoes, excavator rentals, earthmoving machines, material handling trucks, aerial work platforms, landscaping equipment, and power tools they are able to service the construction, commercial, industrial, and homeowner industry. Volvo Rents of Orlando has special monthly rates on boom lifts, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, dump trucks, and forklift rentals. Their equipment is conveniently offered by the day, week, and month.

In addition to purchasing an Orlando, FL company, Volvo Rents recently acquired a Salt Lake City, UT construction equipment rental company and a CE company in Milwaukee, WI. They operate over 70 equipment rental locations throughout North America that fall within their growing network of company-owned and franchised rental stores.

Bulldozer History: What You May Not Have Known

For many, bulldozers are a simple and utilitarian piece of construction equipment. Heavy machine operators use them every day in order to carry out the many earthmoving applications that are necessary on various job sites. Dozer rentals are readily available from most heavy construction equipment supply companies.

Bulldozer or Dozer Crawler

However, bulldozers have an interesting history. There are no clear answers to who first invented the bulldozer. Many believe that American Benjamin Holt first devised the “caterpillar” as he dubbed it, or crawler tractor. What’s closer to the truth is that Holt first implemented the endless chain tread for his steam engine in 1904. While this machine was more a track-laying traction engine than a bulldozer proper, it did evoke the spirit of a modern bulldozer.

While it’s not known with certainty who invented the first bulldozer as we know it, the first bulldozer blade was used before any tractor. Pushed by mules, a large blade mounted to a frame would spread dirt or fill a hole. As you can imagine, this arrangement was much harder to throw into reverse than a modern bulldozer.

The term “bulldozer” has a colorful past as well. Few know that the term actually refers only to the blade at the front of a tractor, though it has come to represent the entire machine in years since its first use. Speculation is that the term refers to a habit in which bulls will push against each other in harmless displays of strength. During mating season, when more rides on such displays, these competitions grow more fierce.

Another potential meaning comes from the antiquated term “bull-dose,” used in the 1800s, which was a large or efficient dose of any medicine or punishment. Giving one a bull dose involved a beating or intense coercion ( perhaps at gunpoint). By the late 1800s, the term had morphed into “bulldozing” which involved using force to push through any obstacle.

The bulldozer is an iconic piece of equipment for good reason, and has built an interesting history in its wake (though nothing else was left standing).

San Antonio Forklift Rentals in Texas

Forklift Certification Will Boost Your Resume

This construction equipment information sponsored by Volvo Rents of Pflugerville, TX, (providing construction equipment rentals in Austin, TX) and Buda, TX (providing construction equipment rentals in San Antonio, TX).

Forklift Rental
Forklifts and forklift rentals are key players in any warehouse; manufacturing and shipping companies simply couldn’t operate without these material handling machines. They’re universal; almost everyone on the planet knows what a forklift does and how it operates. Of course, when it comes to smaller items, one can just use a hand cranked material lift, but when it comes to material handling applications involving moving large pallets of items, there’s no better tool than a forklift, reach forklift or telehandler.

While you don’t need special training to operate a hand operated material lift, forklifts are more serious and potentially dangerous machines. As such, any forklift operator needs to pass certification for his specific piece of equipment. In fact, most warehouse positions throughout the San Antonio, TX and Austin, TX area call for certified forklift operators, so achieving a certification will enhance any warehouse worker’s employ-ability.

It may be tempting to hop in the driver’s seat and take the wheel when starting a new job, but all workers should report to their managers for proper training. With the right equipment, training, and workers, forklifts and forklift rentals are the backbone of any warehouse.

The Evolution of Travel – Canada Baby Equipment Rentals

Airline travel with children can be a challenge. It is even more difficult trying to pack everything needed for a family vacation. Baby Equipment Rental companies like Parentals, a Winnipeg, MB, Canada baby equipment and supply company, make the job a lot easier!

Baby Equipment Rentals for Families Traveling With Kids

The Evolution of Travel

I was once a business traveler.  I had the one piece of luggage that just fit into the contraption that all carry-ons must fit into, just fit down the airplane aisle, and also just fit into the overhead bins.  I had a system for travel, timed to the minute so I could arrive at the airport with my pre-printed boarding pass, get through security with relative ease, and have time for a latte before boarding the plane.  I had my book and coffee, my iPod and laptop, and I was relaxed and ready for the trip.

Then, I was a traveling new mom.  I first flew with my three-day-old son and immediately realized that life even on the airplane was going to be very different.  I couldn’t pre-print my boarding pass with a lap child on the ticket, I had so much more luggage, I needed lots more time at the airport, I was dealing with car seats and strollers and still wasn’t practiced on the folding and unfolding, security was a challenge because of the extra items, and the latte went out the window in favor of a feeding before boarding.  Four years later, I realize that those were the “good-old-days” because the baby slept 90% of the time and couldn’t run away.

Now, I am a traveling mom.  I recently traveled with my four year old and two year old boys, and I am also very pregnant with a third child.  The kids were running everywhere because they were excited about going on the airplane and wanted to see everything all at once.  There were three pairs of shoes to get off and on at security, three jackets to keep track of, three carry-on bags filled with precious snacks and toys, and of course, three boarding passes.  There was a stroller which didn’t carry any kids, but rather was filled with all of our stuff.  We needed ample time to do every step of the flying experience, from check-in with all the luggage to security to boarding, but had young children without much patience for sitting around.  We made it to our destination and I am happy to report that I have never seen the people on the airplane again.  They are likely happy to say the same about us.

The challenge of traveling with kids doesn’t end at the airport, however.  We still have to think about transportation, sleeping, and eating arrangements.  So, how can young families make it easier to travel?

There are now many baby equipment rental companies worldwide, whose sole purpose is to help make traveling easier.  I opened Parentals, a child equipment rental company, in my hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with that exact intent.  While renting gear can’t get your kids to settle down at the airport, it can help ease the stress of packing and traveling with kids.  In Winnipeg, travelers can rent brand name, high quality car seats, cribs, kitchen boosters, strollers and much more for their visits to our beautiful city.  I also recently added a portable travel toddler bed to the options for families looking to rent gear, specifically for those families with a rambunctious toddler too big for a crib, but too small for a bed.  The travel toddler bed rental also works for families going camping, or passing through Winnipeg on their way to one of our many small towns nearby.

Parentals also hosts a Winnipeg Children’s Activities Calendar, which lists all the things to do with kids in Winnipeg.  We post on Facebook when there is a new addition to the calendar, so our Facebook fans always know of exciting things to see and do with kids in Winnipeg.

So, if you are coming to Winnipeg to experience our friendly Canadian hospitality, enjoy our authentic winter, jump in our many gorgeous lakes or fish some of our best kept secrets, call Parentals to help make your journey with kids easier and your stay more enjoyable. – by Karen Dunmall

Dallas Skid Steer Rentals & New Skid Steer Technology

New Technology in Skid Steer Studs

This construction equipment information sponsored by Volvo Rents of McKinney, TX (Dallas – Ft Worth) and Bryan, TX (Waco, Temple, Killeen) - The Skid Steer Rental Dallas TX and Skid Steer Loader Rental Waco TX experts.

Texas Skid Steer Rental

If you’ve used or rented a skid steer loader in cold weather, you’re probably familiar with the many annoyances involved with installing tire studs. The screws or ice racing studs you may have installed to provide traction in slippery conditions can be impossible to remove or may even cause permanent tire damage. The screws don’t last very long, and when the head wears off, it’s virtually impossible to take them off. If that happens, you’re left with a screw that may work itself down into the tire and eventually puncture it.

eTerra has created a set of skid steer tire studs they’re calling Grip Studs that are an innovation in skid steer tire stud technology. Their studs use a hex head that extends past the carbide in the stud. Even as the carbide wears down with use, the hex head remains, making sure that removal – even of a well worn stud – will always be possible. Some of their studs have even racked up 600 hours of use, meaning you can remove and re-use the same studs.

Studs can be installed with an electronic screw driver or cordless drill, and their removal is as simple as installation.
