ZBoard Could Be the Next Craze for Commuters

ZBoard Image

Step aside, Segway. What began as a mechanical engineering project for two seniors at the University of Southern California in 2009 has quickly generated major buzz across the country. Heralded as the “Skateboard of the Future” by Forbes magazine, the ZBoard is an electric skateboard that responds to a rider’s weight distribution. The ZBoard’s deck is equipped with both front and rear foot pads that enable the rider to accelerate or brake, as well as off-road wheels and a built-in handle for convenience.

Lean, Mean, and Green

Considered a green product, the ZBoard has an electric motor that gets a carbon footprint equivalent of up to 1,500 miles per gallon and the product’s modular design makes it simple to swap in and out parts. The ZBoard can also travel across most urban terrain at a top speed of 17 miles per hour and can climb small and medium hills, especially when it gets a rolling start.

Currently, there are three ZBoard models on the market – Classic, Pro, and San Francisco Special – ranging in price from $649-$1,199 and backed by a 90-day limited warranty. The ZBoard can support riders up to 225 pounds and can be fully recharged in just five hours. Although the ZBoard will not roll as well as a standard skateboard, it will roll. However, unlike its non-motorized counterpart, the ZBoard isn’t completely waterproof and shouldn’t be ridden in the rain.

Launched in 2012, the ZBoard is still new to the market but demand is growing. For those looking for an alternative way to commute to work – or heck, tour a city – the ZBoard is a fun and eco-friendly means to get around town. The best part? You won’t look like a mall cop while riding it.

Imagine sitting quietly in your conference room with a couple dozen fellow co-workers in attendance. You received the memo to be there, but the specifics of why you’ve been beckoned to grace this meeting with your presence are unclear. It doesn’t take long for you to notice the cutting edge projector screen, video projector, and set of speakers, all of which you’re certain don’t belong to the office. As the accountant, you know the budget won’t allow for such luxurious purchases.

Minutes into the briefing, a typical meeting is transformed into a clinic of audio and visual splendor. It’s official: Milwaukee is now on the TEDx (Technology Entertainment and Design program that is area specific and independently organized) map. In early May 2013, the neighborhood of Harambee hosted the city of Milwaukee’s first TEDx event in front of a sold out crowd at a small venue north of downtown.

In all, the event featured 10 presentations from 13 guest speakers including Emmanuel Pratt, executive director of the Sweetwater Foundation and Mike Lovell, chancellor or the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee around the theme of STEAM. Using a blended disciplinary approach, STEAM aims to tackle social, economic, and environmental challenges through science, technology, engineering, arts, and music.

Milwaukee Joins the Ranks

For those unable to attend the free event, presentations were streamed live at viewing parties at Bucketworks, a collaborative workspace, and the Hudson Business Lounge and Espresso Bar. Since 2009, TEDx, a program of local, self-organized events that help spread ideas and spark discussions in small groups, has spread to more than 1,2000 cities in 133 countries worldwide. Looks like you’re in good company, Milwaukee.

Art Institute of Chicago Uses New Technology to Tell Its Story

Christie MicroTiles display at the University of Toronto

Christie MicroTiles technology on display at the University of Toronto

Looking to grab the attention of those passing by the new Leroy Neiman Center, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) has purchased 25 Christie MicroTiles to create works of art in each of the 16-foot tall windows on either side of the structure.

Unlike traditional video display boards and monitors, the new technology can be reconfigured into captivating shapes “providing artists with a digital canvas of almost limit shapes for their work,” said Craig Downs, director of media services at SAIC. Rather than being restricted to a rectangle or single screen, the modular products will enable students to “push the edges of ordinary artistic expectations,” according to Downs. The school’s plan is to use the versatile technology as both a teaching tool and its own exhibition space.

Vacation Rentals for Travel and Leisure’s Top US City to Visit

SuitcaseWe are over halfway through National Tourism Week. Although that doesn’t leave much time for planning a trip this weekend, don’t fret. Rent It Today is here to make your vacation planning simple, so you can relax and enjoy some time away from the daily grind.

When looking for top vacation spots, we seek the advice of friends, family, and those in the travel industry. Since I don’t know your friends or family, I’m here to share the industry experts’ suggestions on where to celebrate the remainder of National Tourism Week.

Drumroll, Please

The vacay experts at Travel and Leisure have compiled a list of the hottest travel destinations of 2013. Can you guess which one US city made the cut? If you guessed Minneapolis, you’re right! I admit, even I thought “Why Minneapolis instead of cities like Chicago, Hilton Head, NYC, or Los Angeles?” I think the answer is best summed up by additional travel industry leader, Trip Advisor. Their Minneapolis Tourism page states,

“With its gleaming skyscrapers set amid glittering lakes, Minneapolis makes for an attractive and fun getaway. A truly year-round destination, the city offers activities for every season. In winter, one can explore the downtown area through more than seven miles of glass-enclosed skyways. In addition to keeping you warm, they create a lively thoroughfare filled with specialty shops, restaurants and services. Whether you want to escape the winter cold or the summer warmth, the Mall of America offers shopping, dining and entertainment options for any time of the year and every member of the family. Art lovers have plenty to see at the Minneapolis Art Institute, Walker Art Center and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, which all house world-renowned collections. The theater scene is thriving. With more than thirty theaters, Minneapolis has more seats per capita than any U.S. city except New York. See a Broadway show and enjoy dinner and live jazz at a fabulous restaurant. With kids in tow, check out the Science Museum of Minnesota, where visitors can produce their own video, or come face to face with a shark at the UnderWater Adventures Aquarium. In summer, the action moves outside. Known as “The City of Lakes,” Minneapolis has 22 lakes located within city limits and many more in the surrounding area. In town, hordes of locals and tourists in-line skate or stroll around Lake Calhoun, stopping for ice cream along the way. Just outside of town, Fort Snelling State Park offers outdoor recreational activities from hiking to biking and golf to boating. No matter when you visit, Minneapolis offers lots for everyone to enjoy. “

Tips to Stay Connected While Traveling Abroad

Tech-Go Image

In today’s society, many people have a constant need to stay connected. Whether they are at home or on the road, most individuals keep a cell phone by their side. For most Americans, their phone, plan, and service fit their needs. At any given time and in any part of the country, they can make a call, send a text and perhaps browse the web. What happens, however, if a person plans on traveling abroad? Will their smartphone, tablet, or other device work and if so, what is the cost? For those individuals who have the luxury of exploring another country, here are a few tips to staying connected overseas.

Check with Your Carrier

A Wi-Fi enabled device allows any user to connect to the Web within a local Wi-Fi hotspot. However, a CDMA phone might not work in a country where GSM is the standard and vice versa. To avoid issues while you’re away, be sure to check with your service provider before you leave to determine whether your phone will work with the wireless networks wherever you’re headed.

Keep Costs in Check

Instead of calling (and paying extra for international connections) send a short text message instead. Some U.S. carriers count those messages as part of your monthly plan limit while others offer international messaging packages as an add-on service. If you travel abroad often, you might also want to look into adding an international calling plan to your existing service to take advantage of discounted rates.

Purchase a Prepaid SIM Card

If you have an “unlocked” mobile phone, consider purchasing a prepaid SIM card and installing it in your phone. This card allows some U.S. phones to access a carrier’s network abroad. Although you will no longer be tied to your mobile number back home in the States, you’ll still be able to take advantage of most of your phone’s capabilities. When you return home, simply remove the disposable SIM card from your phone and replace it with its original.

Go to the Net

Hotel ComputerAfraid of racking up a big bill on your phone? Use a computer in the hotel lobby or at an internet café to access Skype or Google Voice. Skype offers free person-to-person chats or unlimited calls to mobile and landline numbers over the internet for a small monthly fee. Google Voice also allows users to make calls at a penny per minute to U.S. numbers.

Rent-A-Phone

One final suggestion is to rent a mobile phone in advance online or pick one up once you arrive at your destination. These phones operate on local networks and may include additional connection and service fees so be sure to ask a lot of questions before you sign an agreement.

Tech-Go is the go-to source for mobile phone and other electronic equipment rentals. A nationwide provider, Tech-Go provides smartphones, wireless broadband cards, laptops, GPS devices, two-way radios, and audio-visual equipment at some of the lowest rates in the country. From Apple to Blackberry, Tech-Go carries the best brands on the market today.

Rent Two-Way Radios That Are FCC Compliant

walky talky

FCC Will Begin Enforcing Compliance with Narrowbanding Mandate.

In a public notice issued on March 14, 2013, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced it will proceed with plans to determine compliance with the narrowbanding mandate which took effect on January 1st.

Public and private organizations utilizing two-way radio communication and not yet in compliance with the narrowbanding mandate can essentially garner two take aways from the notice.

The first is the FCC will actively verify compliance in the near future. The second is by gaining compliance the penalties for failure to do so can still be avoided. The FCC stated the reason for the notice was to provide guidance to various organizations still in the process of converting from 25kHz to 12.5 kHz communication technology.

Many affected parties missed the deadline, but had submitted waiver requests. The sheer volume of those requests meant the FCC was unable to address them by the time compliance was mandated.

Noncompliance Still Significant Nationwide

The Department of Homeland Security estimates 1 in 5 licensees are still operating on the older technology.

The Enterprise Wireless Alliance, in their own announcement following that of the FCC, suggested that operators should remove non-compliant wideband emission designators on their licenses, even if the license designates a compliant emission.

The FCC has advised operators who are non-compliant to either cease operations immediately or file a waiver for an extension of the narrowbanding deadline.

Businesses which rent or lease compliant two-way communication systems are expected to see increased engagement from non-compliant operators. Not only can rental of a compliant system  avoid fines, the rental company can assist in transition to a permanent compliant system in most cases.
