Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts Get Much Needed Snow

A series of storms that moved through the popular Lake Tahoe Ski Vacation Region in mid January has brought long awaited significant snowfall to the areas ski resorts.

This season Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts have experienced unusually low snowfall to this point, with most relying on snow machines to make the snow to allow them to operate. The recent snowfall deposited upwards of two feet of fresh powder which was welcomed by resort operators, who were happy to see Mother Nature help return the slopes to more natural conditions. Several runs were unable to be opened because of the snow shortfall, yet resort operators were optimistic that the recent snowfall would allow the mothballed runs to be opened for business as usual.

The gift from the skies came less than a week after a group of Paiute, Shoshone and Washoe tribal members performed a traditional Native American ceremony seeking spiritual help to bring snow to the Sierra.  A crowd of participants estimated in excess of 200 people took part in the January 15th exercise at Homewood on Lake Tahoe’s western shore.

A similar Native American ceremony conducted in Vail, Colorado recently produced an increase in much needed snowfall in that ski resort area.

As a result of the new snow on the slopes, Lake Tahoe will experience an increase in vacation and weekend getaway visitors which will create a spike in demand for rental accommodations. Standard equipment can include a big screen TV and refrigerator, and the driving theme is to ‘have it all’ in your own space. Virtually any creature comfort can be incorporated. Pool tables, poker tables, pinball machines, and video games are not uncommon additions.

Safe Use of Aerial Boom Lifts Minimizes the Risk of Fall Hazards and Saves Lives

Boom lift rentals, scissor lifts, and man lifts are construction site staples, thanks to their ability to provide a stable aerial work platform that places workers in normally hard-to-reach areas where work must be done. With any type of construction work or heavy equipment use there are always hazards and risks involved. When it comes to renting aerial boom lifts and working at heights, fall hazards are the top safety priority.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Construction Workplace Safety and Health division reported “according to the 2009 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 605 workers were killed and an estimated 212,760 workers were seriously injured by falls to the same or lower level. The highest frequency of fall-related fatalities was experienced by the construction industry (NIOSH Construction Fall Injuries Prevention in the Workplace).”

The great tragedy is that most, if not all, of these accidents could be prevented through proper training and by observing appropriate safety precautions.

Lanyards, safety harnesses, and/or full body harnesses should be worn at all times while working at heights. As with any motor vehicle, operators should perform a safety inspection prior to operation. Any worn or broken parts must  immediately be repaired or replaced. Tires must be in working order and all screws must be securely tightened to ensure the safe operation of the vehicle.

Aerial lifts must be operated in a situations for which they were designed. Boom lift rentals should be  operated on level ground or inclines within their recommended safe ranges. Anything outside of that range could cause the lift to break free and roll or slide during operation. Additionally, workers should keep a look out for low-hanging wires or other overhead obstructions. Colliding with overhead structures can cause not only monetary damage but also severe injuries. Thorough training must be completed before operation. It might be tempting to pick up these skills on the job, but that’s how expensive and potentially life-threatening accidents occur. Common sense can save the day. If you’re planning to operate a vehicle, don’t do so until you’re adequately trained.

In order to successfully reduce the risks of fall hazards, fall injuries, and fatalities from falling regulators, manufacturers, construction equipment rental companies, contractors or employers, workers, safety professionals and researchers must work together. Most of us have attended a major event and seen enterprising individuals turn their nearby yards  and driveways into parking lots to cash in on the demand for convenient access. My first experience with this phenomenon was at the Indy 500 in 1969. It seemed like every yard within   two miles of the famed oval was occupied by homeowners offering their yards and driveways as parking lots. And business was brisk.

An enterprising entrepreneur has taken this idea and created a web site to expand this concept to almost any available parking space in North America. Anthony Eskinazi, CEO and founder of ParkatmyHouse.com intends to make more convenient parking available to drivers while delivering dollars to driveway owners across America.

Eskinazi, 28, launched the website in 2006, test marketing the idea in his hometown neighborhood in the U.K.  The inspiration for the idea occurred when he was a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley. Eskinazi had tickets to a San Francisco Giants and when he motored to the ballpark vicinity,  he had trouble finding a spot to berth his vehicle.

On his student budget, Anthony found the rate advertised in available lots to be a bit steep for his wallet. Also, previous experience with post-game traffic had taught him that exit from these lots required a long wait which necessitated an early exit from the game if he wanted to avoid the delay in getting to his next destination.

Nearby empty parking spaces reserved for residents and businesses caused a light bulb to come on in his head and he recognized a business opportunity connecting supply and demand.

Since launching the web site, more than 150,000 people in the U.K. have earned more than $5 million from the site, Eskinazi said.  His goal is to take the rental site worldwide, with a target market being anyone with an address or geographic point with a latitude and longitude and a parking space available for rent. The site assists drivers in finding spots in a specific area and allows payments online. Homeowners post driveways and businesses post parking during their off-peak hours. A church in London, England reports turning a sizable profit renting spots in their prime location.

The idea might just catch on. It has been featured in the New York Times, BBC News, and recently announced a strategic long term investment by automaker BMW.  Apparently there’s a lot of appeal in potentially paving your driveway with gold. I’m currently searching spots in Indianapolis. Not for the 500. I can’t wait until May. The Super Bowl is just around the corner. Heck, this might even create a new real estate bubble for homes within easy reach of popular venues.

Recently while rummaging through the attic of an old mansion built in the 1840’s, this writer came across an old tarnished brass lamp and thoughts of Aladdin began to dance through my head. Thought to myself, just what might I wish for if I rubbed this and a genie appeared who did in fact grant me a wish?

Hmmm, I pondered, how about the motorcycle ride of my life along the breathtaking roads of the Italian Tuscany region aboard a sleek exotic European machine? And then, since I’m in Italy, why not ask the genie to provide an Italian woman who reminds me of my favorite Italian movie star, Sophia Loren? Heck, I’d even settle for Elisabetta Canalis on the back of my motorbike.

I imagined she and I hopping aboard a Ducati motorcycle for a tour of some of the great motorcycle roads of the Apennine Mountains of Italy. For good measure, once we got done with the mountain roads, we would visit a genuine Italian motorcycle race track to put a couple of those KTM bikes through their paces and see what they were really made of.

Self Storage Facility or Crematorium? 

Self storage facilities offer many practical uses which are utilized by large numbers of consumers and businesses. The ways self storage facilities are used are quite varied, and one currently proposed method to employ a storage unit warrants closer examination for its unique application.

A recent article in the Virgin Island Daily News reports that a self storage business in St. Thomas, USVI has applied for a permit to use rented self storage space to operate a crematorium.

The proposed crematorium would occupy two self storage units in the southernmost buildings of the Fortress Self Storage . The proposal is currently under review. Saint Thomas currently doesn’t have a crematorium, and residents who wish to have remains of their deceased loved ones cremated have to travel to Puerto Rico for the service.

The funeral home owner who wants to operate the crematorium has met with some opposition from other renters. The facility has a number of tenants including a dance instructor, a bakery, and two salons, among others. The proposed crematorium would house a propane-fired chamber heated to at least 1,800 degrees. According to the report, the proposed 30-ton unit meets existing air pollution regulations and zoning ordinances.

The proposal does present some interesting possible future scenarios. If the proposal is denied, one might say it died and went up in smoke. Or if the proposal is approved and the tenant eventually fails to pay on the unit, can you imagine the episode of Storage Wars that could be filmed? Picture the reaction of the bidders when the door is rolled up to reveal a 30 ton crematory furnace.

Although perhaps a bit out of the mainstream, this story does illustrate the versatility of self storage rental. Perhaps the take away lesson here is, if you plan to rent a self storage space to house a crematorium, be prepared to meet some stiff resistance.

The recent stories about Black Friday shopping, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday are  reminders that the holiday gift buying season is officially in full swing. Visions of folks coming home with a car full of presents or the delivery truck pulling up to the curb to drop off the internet purchases made this writer wax nostalgic about my younger days when every year my three brothers and I engaged in a yearly Yuletide game of hide and seek with our parents.

Every year my parents would hide the holiday gift purchases in a spot they thought was secure, and every year we would find the stash spot. Of course, my kids have inherited this trait and every year they seem to find the spot we have determined just couldn’t be discovered.

Then I ran the idea past a couple of my friends and was hailed as a genius. So now I wonder if I am being cruel as the poor kids will ransack the house once again this year only to come up empty handed.  Will they think they’re being skunked? That mom and dad are bust? Then I fast forward to the morning when they finally see their gifts which have been safely stored off site  and all is well. The fact that the scene will be repeated at my co-conspirators homes just adds to my mirth.

The best thing about the whole experience so far is that I have a bit of extra space in that storage rental unit so I have permanently relocated a few of my personal belongings there for safe keeping and to free up a little room around the castle. Everybody is happy. Except the kids, for now.

The Indoor Water Park is a great way to reflect back on summer even while it is still bitter cold outside.  At a constant 84 degrees, you’ll want to break out the bathing suits.  There are so many rides and features, the whole family will be entertained for hours.  Try your hand at surfing on the Pipeline, the largest FlowRider in Virginia.  For the little ones, the Frog Pond is perfect, with a maximum depth of 12”.  There are swings, water spraying noodles, and a frog slide.  Maybe floating lazily down a river is your idea of relaxation at its best.  You can, in the Blue Ridge Rapids.  The central feature, known as the Massanutten Meltdown, contains water cannons, waterfalls, five slides, a giant tipping bucket, and more.
