Dual Sport Motorcycle Rentals in The Great Smoky Mountains

Today we are excited about featuring a new rental company and subcategory in Rent It Today’s Motorcycle category: Dual Sport Motorcycle Rentals.  We asked Dan Dickie, owner of GSMmotoRent.com, who lives near Gatlinburg, Tennessee & The Great Smoky Mountain National Forrest, to tell us all about dual sport bikes…
Smoky Mountain Dual Sport Motorcycle Rentals and Tours
Why ride dual sport motorcycles?
Let’s face it, there’s a time and a place for everything and every kind of Motorcycle.  “Cruisers” are great for Sunday afternoon riding but the seating position can compromise control on the twisties.  Sport bikes will feed the need for speed, but just try getting off the beaten path: SPLAT.  Touring bikes are great for long distance travel, but sometimes you want something a little lighter to maneuver around on.  Dirt bikes tell it like it is: try riding one for 100 miles on the highway: NOT FUN.
Which brings us to dual sport bikes:
Dual sport is a broad term for street legal motorcycles that are designed to enter off-road situations.  An original definition of dual sport was: “dual” as in road & dirt, and “sport” as  in non-competitive venues.  This concept remains true today.  Kawasaki KLR 650′s, Suzuki DR 200′s, and Suzuki DR 650′s are some of the most popular dual sport bikes on the market today.  Ugly as heck, they are meant to take you to the beautiful places, not to sit and stare at all day like a fool.  Dual sport motorcycles, also known as adventure touring, are a combination of off-road and on-road capability.  It’s a great day when you can catch a twisty in the morning, have lunch in the mountains mid-day, and return to civilization via an unimproved fire road.
Maybe that’s why dual sport motorcycles are so popular. Their torque-y single cylinder engines, exceptional clearance  and road sticking capability get you through the twisties like butter.  Lightweight, with large capacity fuel tanks combined with great fuel economy makes them perfect for a day of riding in the mountains and a full day of fun.  KLR 650′s have plenty of load carrying capability for multi-day trips or camping. Come try one and see what you think.  We think you will be pleasantly surprised — after all, KLR 650′s are the first choice for most round the world travelers on two wheels.  There is a reason dual sports are the world’s most versatile bike. This IS the everything bike!

GSMmotoRent Dual Sport AdventuresHere at GSMmotoRent we offer Kawasaki KLR 650′s, Suzuki DR 200′s, and Suzuki DR 650′s dual sport motorcycle rentals for your riding pleasure. GSMmotoRent.com also provides guided motorcycle tour rentals with tour guides like Terry Finchum (Smoky Mountain Dual Sport), and self-guided tour planning throughout the scenic raods and trails of The Great Smoky Mountains in Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Good roads include The Dragon, Blue Ridge Pkwy, Cherohala Skyway, and the Foothills Pkwy.  Trails include Parson’s Branch Rd, Rich Mountain Rd, and Heintooga Rd, all in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  North Carolina offers trails such as Tatum Gap Rd, Winding Stairs, Max Patch Rd, and many more throughout the Cherokee and Pisgah National Forests.  We have many of these mapped out with turn by turn directions. -Dan Dickie, owner GSMmotoRent.com

Travel to Shenandoah Valley and Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains

Fresh air, breath taking mountain views, unlimited outdoor activities, and a chance to get away from the daily grind are all part of traveling to The Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia.  Today’s article features The Shenandoah Valley, a popular vacation destination in the mountains of Central Virginia, along with vacation cabin rentals in the area.  Shenandoah Valley Cabin Rentals with Mountain Views

Enjoy the Outdoor Wonders of Central Virginia

People who love outdoor activities will not find a better place to vacation – or to live – than Central Virginia.   There are so many things to do and natural wonders to explore, you’ll never tire of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

When Stan Horst moved to Central Virginia 20 years ago, he found the perfect place to live.  Stan and his wife, Debbie, a Virginia native, own and operate Cabin Creekwood, a vacation rental business near Waynesboro.

Novice and expert hikers alike will find trails to suit their preference for a walk in the woods or a serious hike while taking in views from a mountain top or a cascading waterfall.  Some of the options for hiking are:

•    The Appalachian Trail covers over 2100 miles from Maine to Georgia and is the nation’s longest marked footpath.   The Appalachain Trail in Central Virginia crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway a number of times and can be easily accessed just two miles from Cabin Creekwood.
•    Humpback Rocks Trail leads to Humpback Rocks, to Humpback Mountain and to the Humpback Rocks picnic area.  From this trail, ambitious hikers take a spur trail to a strenuous 700 foot climb providing amazing views of the Rockfish and Shenandoah Valleys.  Continuing one more mile, hikers reach the summit of Humpback Mountain with views of the mountain ridges to the north.
•    Spy Rock Trail is one of the Horst’s favorite hikes just for the incredible views offered.   According to legend, Confederate Soldiers used Spy Rock as a lookout for Union Troops.  Once you reach Spy Rock you’ll understand why.
•    Crabtree Falls is said to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Virginia and the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi.   This natural wonder with five cascades is definitely a must-see for visitors to the area.  Anyone can enjoy Crabtree Falls as the first cascade is handicapped accessible.  After walking to the bottom of the lowest falls, the trail becomes dirt and you are on one of nine switchbacks that take you to the top of the Falls.  With guardrails on the steeper parts, the trail is well maintained and there are railed observation points for the most scenic overlooks.  It may be tempting to climb over the stone wall to the uppermost falls but resist the urge as the rocks are covered with algae and are very slippery.
•    Torry Ridge Trail is 7 miles long and follows the crest of Torry Ridge, providing great views of wilderness areas.

Caverns are a popular tourist destination in the Shenandoah Valley.  The closest caverns to Cabin Creekwood, Grand Caverns, are less commercialized than many similar cavern attractions perhaps due to being operated by a regional park authority.  Stan often recommends Grand Caverns as his personal favorite.  The Cathedral Hall, which is 289 feet long and over 70 feet high, is an awesome sight with its massive columns, rippling flowstone, and rare “shield” formations.  This cave was visited by both Confederate and Union Soldiers and has over 230 verified signatures of Civil War soldiers.

Luray Caverns are perhaps the best known caverns in Virginia attracting people from all over North America and more than 50 foreign countries.   Well-lighted walkways wind through huge chambers with breathtaking stalactites and cathedral sized rooms then lead to mirror-perfect pools of water.  Guides at Luray share stories about the science behind the natural wonders and how the caverns were discovered.   This is the home of the world’s only “stalacpipe organ” which plays haunting music on natural formations.

The General's Cabin - Red River Gorge Vacation Rental Cabin in KentuckyThe General’s Cabin

On March 18, of 1923 Jim Little was born in the Appalachian hills of southeastern Kentucky. Poor beyond measure, he walked to a one room school house a few miles from his home where he would alternate between his studies and day-dreaming about a better life for himself. Beauty surrounded him in spring when the redbud dotted the hills of green, and this young boy, full of intelligence and yearning knew he would have to make a way out of the poverty and deprivation he lived with daily.  He literally walked out of the hills of Kentucky, worked his way through the engineering program at the university   with the help of an ROTC stipend and graduated in the spring of 1941, just in time to be among the first Americans to be deployed in the Second World War. After an illustrious career of nearly 30 years, he would return as a highly decorated warrior who completed some 123 combat missions as a Flying Tiger, hero of the air war in Korea, as well as a test pilot of early jet age, and attaining the rank of General at the age of 40. He retired and could have lived anywhere in the world, but chose to return to the hills of his birth to create a beautiful hand-built cabin nestled in the woods on a magnificent 40 acre site. Here he lived in a delicious peace and solitude the quiet life of a farmer adoring the splendor of his native hills until the very day he died in 1995.

I, General Little’s daughter, lovingly took on the restoration of my father’s cabin shortly after his death. Not wanting it or him to be forgotten I have offered it for rental to the public since 2005. I invite you to experience this one of a kind cabin for yourself.

Please take the time to go to www.generalscabin.com and reserve your dates.

Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals logo

Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals (Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria) launched in 2005 as Canada’s first baby equipment rental company. Over the years, the company has sought out new products and innovative ways to make it safer, easier, and less stressful for families to fly with small children. The company recently opened The Modage, a beautiful furnished vacation rental in Kitsilano. After hearing customers remark over and over again how difficult it is to stay in hotels with small children, Wee Travel decided a vacation rental property was the solution. A fully equipped kitchen, fridge, stove, laundry facilities and baby gear such as a crib, highchair, carseat, stroller and toys were all key desires of their customers. The Modage was converted to a furnished vacation rental in August 2009. It’s stunning and welcomes kids and pets. The 1300 square foot townhouse is located in one of the most desirable areas of the city, and is within walking distance to Kits beach, Granville Island and a variety of trendy shopping areas and kids parks/water parks. It comes complete with a crib and highchair if required, and a full range of baby gear can be provided for a minimal cost. Now that’s what we call the “stress free” route to Vancouver.

Vacationing in Summit County: Colorado’s Winter Playground

Have you hit the slopes yet this ski season?  If not, consider heading to “Colorado’s Winter Playground”.  The second part to our series on Colorado travel and vacation destinations features the ski resorts and towns of Summit County, Colorado.

Breckenridge, Colorado in Summit County

Breckenridge, Colorado

Summit County is Colorado’s Winter Playground

It’s not hard to understand why Summit County is Colorado’s most popular ski and snowboard destination.  Boasting the four world-class ski resorts of Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, and Copper Mountain, Summit County is Colorado’s hot spot for winter sports.  Plus, the multitude of lodging and shopping options in the towns of Frisco, Silverthorne, and Dillon make planning a vacation to Summit County affordable and convenient.  So, exactly what can you expect from a trip to Summit?

Limitless Skiing Options: Each Summit County ski resort offers its own claim to fame.  With a summit elevation of 13,050 feet, Arapahoe Basin boasts the highest skiable terrain in all of North America.  Expert and advanced skiers & boarders appreciate the resort’s 25% of terrain devoted to double black diamond trails, mixed with another 25% of black diamonds.  Beginners, however, might prefer Breckenridge’s dedicated beginner trails.  Among its four peaks, Breck has some great beginner spots right alongside its own technically challenging ski and snowboard trails.  Additionally, Breckenridge not only holds the honor of winning Summit County’s award for best ski resort, but also houses the highest chairlift in all of North America.  The largest ski resort in Summit County, Copper Mountain sports expert bowls, terrain parks, and more than 2,400 acres of thrilling skiing and boarding.  It’s no wonder Copper was voted Summit County’s best snowboarding mountain in both 2008 and 2007.  Terrain parks are no joke at Keystone either.  Keystone’s A51 Terrain Park was ranked #4 in all of North America by Transworld Snowboard Magazine.  Plus, with night skiing, hike to bowl skiing, and a range of terrain devoted to skiers and boarders of all levels, Keystone is a popular Summit County choice as well.

Snowmobile Rentals:  Take a break from the slopes and enjoy the expansive backcountry trails throughout Summit County with snowmobile rentals.  ATV and Snowmobile Rental companies, like Colorado Backcountry Rentals, offer snowmobiles for both single and double riders.  When it comes to renting snowmobiles, there are variety of options in Summit County’s popular ski resorts and mountain towns:  Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone , Dillon, and Frisco.

Convenience: Summit County’s close proximity to Denver is just another reason why it’s such a popular ski destination.  Just 70 miles west of Denver, Summit County is easily accessible from the Denver International Airport and is a straight shot via I-70.  Fly into Denver, rent a limousine, and take the short trek to your ski resort destination in style.  While each ski resort has its own amenities and lodging options, the nearby mountain towns of Frisco, Dillon, and Silverthorne also provide endless lodging and convenience options.  Between Victorian Main Street shopping & dining in Breckenridge, a galore of Outlet Factory Stores in Silverthorne, and all the local bars & entertainment venues throughout the county, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy when you’re not hitting the slopes.

Colorado’s Playground: Summit County hasn’t been coined Colorado’s playground without good reason.  Powder days provide plenty of reasons to celebrate all winter long.  And, Summit County certainly knows how to celebrate.  There’s always something exciting marked on the calendar to partake in true Summit County style, from Breckenridge’s International Snow Sculpture Championship to the Keystone Winter Culinary Festival.   Of course, Colorado’s playground wouldn’t be complete without tremendous lodging options that offer all the comforts of home but with a spectacular Rocky Mountain backdrop.  Condos, townhomes, and large vacation homes fill Summit County with choices for every traveling group, including friends, couples, and large families.  Whether you are traveling to Breckenridge for your dream ski vacation, staying in  Keystone, planning a holiday trip to Dillon, or visiting the neighboring  mountain town of Silverthorne, you will find the perfect ski-in/ski-out condo, luxury home, or cabin for your vacation. Plus, rental options make traveling easy. Choose to pack light and rent everything from your ski equipment to your baby’s playpen once you get to town.  If you are disabled and in need of a transportable wheelchair, powerchair or mobility scooter rentals in Colorado there are several reliable companies waiting to accommodate your needs.

Remember, the snow is falling in Colorado.  Why not find the place that gives you the option of four world-class ski resorts, convenience, easy access, and plenty of lodging options?  Once you get to Summit County, you won’t know how you got through winters without it.

Vacationing in Aspen and Snowmass Colorado

With peek ski season in full swing, its a great time to feature some of the popular Ski Resort Areas in Colorado.  Today’s featured vacation destination is Aspen, along with neighboring town Snowmass Village.

Aspen, Colorado: photo courtesy of The Denver Post

Aspen, Colorado: photo courtesy of The Denver Post

While winter weather gives us many reasons to stay indoors and retreat to the warmth and comforts of home, the folks in Aspen & Snowmass have a different idea.  Travel to these Western Colorado towns and it’s quickly apparent why winter weather is not only an incentive to get outdoors, but is also reason to celebrate in the glamorous fashion that makes Aspen and Snowmass famous.

The Glamour, On and Off the Slopes: It’s no secret that Aspen has been called Colorado’s Hollywood.  While designer shops, trendy hotels, and spectacular nightlife create the scene in the town of Aspen, it’s the mountain itself that is truly glamorous.  With 673 acres of skiable terrain, 76 technical trails specifically groomed for advanced and expert skiers, and some of the best ski conditions in all of Colorado, it’s clear that Aspen stands out among the best of Colorado’s ski towns for several reasons.  First, the exclusive nature of Aspen is its blessing.  The mountain’s average of three people to each skiable acre isn’t a statistic you’ll find at many other ski resorts.  And, skiers reign supreme in Aspen.  While nearby Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk are open to boarding, Aspen Mountain’s more advanced runs make it more of a draw for serious skiers.  And, for those who are truly serious, that’s just another reason to celebrate.  Additionally, Aspen’s prevalence of advanced and expert terrain keeps beginners at bay, meaning that you won’t have to fight crowds of children or beginners.  Translation: you can get down to business.

The Mystique: Sure, Aspen holds a reputation of being a posh, stylish community that is geared more toward the affluent skier.  While many visit Aspen due to these traits, Aspen is still just a small mountain community at heart.  In fact, Aspen holds dear to its small town roots, first established in 1947.  So, while you’re sure to find shopping and dining, you’re also guaranteed to witness a real Old West town filled with friendly people and stunning views.  The mountain literally rises from downtown and is surrounded by the beauty of White River National Park.  But, it’s not the beauty and the prestige alone that bring visitors to Aspen.  A season packed with winter events will keep you entertained from day into night.  As the host for the ESPN Winter X Games for the eighth year in a row, Aspen has proven that its average of three hundred inches of snow each year is dependable.  In addition to other competitions such as the Aspen/Snowmass Open and the Colorado Freeride Championship, Aspen also teams with Bud Light to host the free Hi-Fi Concert Series throughout the winter season.

Snowmass Colorado

Snowmass Colorado

The Limitless Opportunities: If you’re a skier, you certainly have options in Aspen and Snowmass.  Retreat from the groomed trails to be the first to ski untouched black and double-black diamond trails.  Or, pick from a palette of steep, bumpy, or tree-lined runs.  To mix things up, head to one of the other nearby mountains and multiply your ski terrain by three, choosing from trails at Snowmass, Buttermilk, or Aspen Highlands.  Of course, Aspen boasts plenty of activities that will occupy the non-skiers in your group as well, from snowshoeing to guided tours to nightly entertainment.

The Luxury: Chances are your travel plans bring you to Aspen because you truly want to get away in the luxury of a world-class ski resort.  The hustle and bustle of everyday life needs to be placed on the back burner, and there’s no better place to retreat than Aspen and Snowmass.  Plenty of Aspen vacation rental options offer accommodations that are not only affordable, but are also as luxurious and glamorous as the town itself.  Ski to lifts from Aspen condos, or relax by the fire in your mountain townhome.  If you have a bigger crew traveling to the area, consider renting a large Aspen vacation home that will include all the comforts of home and give you the additional amenities of a pool or hot tub.  Plus, make your trip to Aspen and Snowmass hassle-free and convenient.  Once you get to town, you’ll be able to rent all the services & equipment you need, from mobility scooter rentals, medical equipment for rent, Limousine Services, ski poles, and snowmobiles to baby equipment.  So, pack light and live the life of convenience in Colorado’s most exclusive mountain town.  But be warned: Aspen’s glamorous lifestyle has been known to be addictive.

Since you need a place to stay while you’re out there, you should check out some affordable vacation home rentals.  If you want to mingle with the locals and have easy access to the night-life, check out some homes in the Salt Lake City metro area. As the commercial says: Want To Get Away? Consider the mountainous seclusion of Park City vacation rentals, giving you easy access to the multitude of ski slopes surrounding you.

Renting makes it affordable to completely optimize your entire vacation.  Obviously, you’re not going to just sit in the home you just rented and watch the Food Network.  Get a little adrenaline in your life and take to the slopes with a snowmobile rental. Want to go off-road where it isn’t quite as slick? Look into renting an ATV Quad or Dirtbike. Want to cruise the city in style? Rent a motorcycle during your stay. Hey! If you’re an angler or want to take to the Great Salt Lake at high speeds, rent a boat, tour, or a jet ski!

As you can see, renting opens up opportunities in an inexpensive way to make your vacation as convenient as possible.  Perhaps you or someone you’re traveling with has a medical condition and can’t get all the necessary health-care gear on the plane.  You can rent the appropriate medical equipment when you get there!

If you’re going to Utah for an extended stay, consider renting an RV or motor-home so you can absorb the scenery, comfortably.

That wasn’t hard was it?  I can’t emphasize enough how rental options will maximize your fun and overall experience of a vacation.  I hope you enjoyed this post about the wonderful state of Utah and specifically, Salt Lake City.  I also hope this gave you vacationers some ideas that you may haven’t thought of.  Eureka!

Renting Has Never Been This Simple, folks. Rent It Today.
