A series of storms that moved through the popular Lake Tahoe Ski Vacation Region in mid January has brought long awaited significant snowfall to the areas ski resorts.

This season Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts have experienced unusually low snowfall to this point, with most relying on snow machines to make the snow to allow them to operate. The recent snowfall deposited upwards of two feet of fresh powder which was welcomed by resort operators, who were happy to see Mother Nature help return the slopes to more natural conditions. Several runs were unable to be opened because of the snow shortfall, yet resort operators were optimistic that the recent snowfall would allow the mothballed runs to be opened for business as usual.

The gift from the skies came less than a week after a group of Paiute, Shoshone and Washoe tribal members performed a traditional Native American ceremony seeking spiritual help to bring snow to the Sierra. A crowd of participants estimated in excess of 200 people took part in the January 15th exercise at Homewood on Lake Tahoe’s western shore.

A similar Native American ceremony conducted in Vail, Colorado recently produced an increase in much needed snowfall in that ski resort area.

As a result of the new snow on the slopes, Lake Tahoe will experience an increase in vacation and weekend getaway visitors which will create a spike in demand for rental accommodations. Safe Use of Aerial Boom Lifts Minimizes the Risk of Fall Hazards and Saves Lives

Boom lift rentals, scissor lifts, and man lifts are construction site staples, thanks to their ability to provide a stable aerial work platform that places workers in normally hard-to-reach areas where work must be done. With any type of construction work or heavy equipment use there are always hazards and risks involved. When it comes to renting aerial boom lifts and working at heights, fall hazards are the top safety priority.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Construction Workplace Safety and Health division reported “according to the 2009 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 605 workers were killed and an estimated 212,760 workers were seriously injured by falls to the same or lower level. The highest frequency of fall-related fatalities was experienced by the construction industry (NIOSH Construction Fall Injuries Prevention in the Workplace).”

The great tragedy is that most, if not all, of these accidents could be prevented through proper training and by observing appropriate safety precautions.

Lanyards, safety harnesses, and/or full body harnesses should be worn at all times while working at heights. As with any motor vehicle, operators should perform a safety inspection prior to operation. Any worn or broken parts must immediately be repaired or replaced. Tires must be in working order and all screws must be securely tightened to ensure the safe operation of the vehicle.

Aerial lifts must be operated in a situations for which they were designed. Boom lift rentals should be operated on level ground or inclines within their recommended safe ranges. Anything outside of that range could cause the lift to break free and roll or slide during operation. Additionally, workers should keep a look out for low-hanging wires or other overhead obstructions. Colliding with overhead structures can cause not only monetary damage but also severe injuries. Thorough training must be completed before operation. It might be tempting to pick up these skills on the job, but that’s how expensive and potentially life-threatening accidents occur. Common sense can save the day. If you’re planning to operate a vehicle, don’t do so until you’re adequately trained.

In order to successfully reduce the risks of fall hazards, fall injuries, and fatalities from falling regulators, manufacturers, construction equipment rental companies, contractors or employers, workers, safety professionals and researchers must work together. Only through collaboration and dedication to improving work environments by implementing new effective fall prevention and protection technologies and safety practices can the construction industry create a safer, more productive workplace.

An Exotic French Riviera or Italian Motorcycle Vacation Isn’t Just A Dream

Recently while rummaging through the attic of an old mansion built in the 1840’s, this writer came across an old tarnished brass lamp and thoughts of Aladdin began to dance through my head. Thought to myself, just what might I wish for if I rubbed this and a genie appeared who did in fact grant me a wish?

Hmmm, I pondered, how about the motorcycle ride of my life along the breathtaking roads of the Italian Tuscany region aboard a sleek exotic European machine? And then, since I’m in Italy, why not ask the genie to provide an Italian woman who reminds me of my favorite Italian movie star, Sophia Loren? Heck, I’d even settle for Elisabetta Canalis on the back of my motorbike.

I imagined she and I hopping aboard a Ducati motorcycle for a tour of some of the great motorcycle roads of the Apennine Mountains of Italy. For good measure, once we got done with the mountain roads, we would visit a genuine Italian motorcycle race track to put a couple of those KTM bikes through their paces and see what they were really made of.

Smitten with this vision, I set down the lamp, went to my computer and got online to search for how I could put the dream together in real life. Saint Thomas currently doesn’t have a crematorium, and residents who wish to have remains of their deceased loved ones cremated have to travel to Puerto Rico for the service.

The funeral home owner who wants to operate the crematorium has met with some opposition from other renters. The facility has a number of tenants including a dance instructor, a bakery, and two salons, among others. The proposed crematorium would house a propane-fired chamber heated to at least 1,800 degrees. According to the report, the proposed 30-ton unit meets existing air pollution regulations and zoning ordinances.

The proposal does present some interesting possible future scenarios. If the proposal is denied, one might say it died and went up in smoke. Or if the proposal is approved and the tenant eventually fails to pay on the unit, can you imagine the episode of Storage Wars that could be filmed? Picture the reaction of the bidders when the door is rolled up to reveal a 30 ton crematory furnace.

Although perhaps a bit out of the mainstream, this story does illustrate the versatility of self storage rental. Perhaps the take away lesson here is, if you plan to rent a self storage space to house a crematorium, be prepared to meet some stiff resistance.

The diesel fuel reservoir, engine oil, and other essential fluids are all extremely easy to check and adjust, which ensures the equipment will always perform at top efficiency.

Of course, maintenance is only one aspect of proper heavy equipment rental use. The Volvo L35B compact loader also has a number of smart safety features to ensure the correct operation of the equipment in all situations. The equipment provides basic necessities like running lights that illuminate the work area in low-light conditions. A particularly innovative feature in the L35B wheel loader is a large pin that can lock the articulating hinge in the middle between the two wheel axles. I’m not in a rush to have a hand or a piece of clothing caught in that monster hinge, so that lock is fantastic for peace of mind while servicing the machine, or using it in a situation that doesn’t necessitate the articulation.
