Summer may be coming to a close, but this year’s wedding season will continue to roll on into the fall months. If you’re in the process of planning your wedding, one of the first things you and your spouse-to-be have likely discussed is your budget. As the average cost of weddings continues to rise, it’s becoming more and more difficult to stay under budget when planning the wedding of your dreams. But, according to a recent article in The Huffington Post, it’s possible.
Below, we’ve shared a few tips to help you have the wedding you want on the budget you have.
- Create a Wedding Philosophy: A wedding philosophy will guide your planning process. Ask yourself questions like: What is the purpose of our wedding? How do we want to feel about it? How do we want our guests to feel about it? What are our values and promises? This will help ensure you’re spending money on things that align with your philosophy.
- List Negotiables vs. Non-Negotiables: Using your wedding philosophy as a guide, you and your partner should create lists of things you can’t imagine your wedding without (non-negotiables) and items that you would like to have but could skip if necessary (negotiables). This will help identify top priorities and help you decide how to spend your money.
- Splurge and Cut Costs: Experts suggest spending extravagantly on the things you love but cut costs dramatically on the things you don’t.
- Research Supply Costs: Use columns labeled “item,” “projected cost,” and “actual cost” when creating a budget for supplies you’d like to buy. Start with non-negotiables and leave wiggle room for unexpected expenses. Once you have a projected total, you may need to go back and make cuts to stay under budget. As you make purchases, track the spending in the “actual cost” column and make adjustments as necessary.
