In July 2013, we discussed the benefits of music training, such as language development and higher IQ scores, for school-aged children. Now, according to a recent study conducted by researchers at Northwestern University, music can also help boost the brain development of high school students.

By now, most of us know that music programs are typically one of the first things to get cut at schools with limited budgets. What you may not know, however, is that these programs may be just as beneficial to a student’s success and development as other classes.

In a study in which researchers observed two sets of high school students – those enrolled in band classes and those enrolled in classes focused on physical fitness – it was found that “studying music promotes academic success and that brain development and language skills are especially strengthened.” After three years in the same schools, the students in music classes showed a “stronger neural response to sound than their study counterparts and were more sensitive to auditory details than their peers.
