The Sundance Film Festival is set to take place on January 22 – February 1, 2015. The festival’s aim since its inception in 1985, is to bring forth the most original storytellers for film loving audiences in Park City, Utah. The festival was originally known as the Utah/US Film Festival until 1991 when it was renamed the Sundance Film Festival, after Robert Redford’s character The Sundance Kid from the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Redford has been instrumental in expanding the popularity of the event since the mid-80s as chairman.
Over three decades later, the Sundance Film Festival has solidified its reputation in the film industry has earned its status as a premier event for independent filmmakers to screen their films to thousands of festival attendees a year.
Notable independent filmmakers received their big break at Sundance, including Quentin Tarantino, David O. Russell, Steven Soderbergh and Paul Thomas Anderson. Sundance was also instrumental in bring films such as Saw, Clerks, Napoleon Dynamite and Reservoir Dogs to a wider audience.
Since 1985, hundreds of films launched at the Festival have gained critical recognition, received commercial distribution, and reached worldwide audiences eager for fresh perspectives and new voices. At Sundance, audiences can also interact with the filmmakers themselves through interview panels such as Cinema Cafe. The actors and directors discuss the film and gives the public a deeper look at the art of storytelling by exploring the cinema culture. Live music is also on hand at the festival throughout its ten day run.
