Turns out the smallest state in the U.S. is a spot for large amounts of fun for traveling seniors. In an article for Senior Citizen Travel, writer Jim Becker touches on several of the top sites in Rhode Island. Below we’ve provided a brief summary of a few of Becker’s favorites:
- Watch Hill – Located halfway between Boston and New York City, Watch Hill sits at the most-southwestern point of Rhode Island. An “affluent coastal village in the town of Westerly,” Watch Hill is best known as the backdrop for the only AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five-Star Hotel in Rhode Island, the Ocean House. Called the “Queen on the Hill”, the hotel underwent a three-year rebuild from the ground up several years ago.
- Other Watch Hill Attractions – In addition to the Ocean House, Watch Hill is also home to The Flying Horse Carousel, a National Historic Landmark and oldest continuously operated carousel in the country, and the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge which covers 409 acres and features “diverse upland and wetland habitats.” It is a great spot for bird-watching, fishing, and nature walks. Finally, Watch Hill is also home one of the oldest lighthouse sites in America. The active lighthouse has served as a nautical beacon for ships since 1745.
