Over the past few weeks, we’ve shared many tips on how to find the perfect vacation rental and how to avoid rental scams. With summer right around the corner and vacation season in full swing, now is the time to get your butt in gear and book that last-minute beachfront home or seaside condo before it’s too late.

Below are a few more tips for those still searching for the right place to get a little rest and relaxation from John Adams of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Safe travels!

  1. It’s never too late to shop for a vacation rental. Now is probably the best time to grab a last minute bargain, especially if you have some flexibility with regards to dates and your destination.
  2. It’s important to understand how the vacation rental business works. The vacation rental market has changed quite a bit in the last 20 years. The Internet allows vacationers to deal directly with the owners rather than traditional local property managers which can mean getting a better deal.
  3. We’ve had good experiences with the major vacation rental sites. Browse sites such as VRBO.com and simply type in your destination to find the rental that’s right for you.
  4. It’s already summer vacation season, but don’t be discouraged. Plan on contacting multiple owners in your desired area, seeking open spots you can fill on their calendar. You probably won’t be able to get a big discount during the busy summer season, but it never hurts to ask. Owners are often more flexible than rental agents.
  5. Dealing directly with the owner can work to your advantage. Owners are motivated to make sure you have a great vacation so you come back with your family year after year. Also, if there’s a problem you are dealing directly with the decision maker instead of a middle man.
  6. Do your homework and make sure you know what you are renting. Look for a listing with lots of photos and be sure to read through traveler reviews. You should also have a point of contact and an open line of communication with the owner via phone, e-mail, and/or text.
