Rise in Helium Prices Could Have Impact on Medical Device Industry

It turns out helium is used for more than just filling balloons. The second most abundant element in the universe, helium is used in electronics manufacturing, the aerospace and defense industries, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines which help diagnose certain diseases.

Prices for the resource may be on the rise, however, if the U.S. federal Helium Reserve near Amarillo, Texas is shut off. The 90-year old reserve provides about a third of the world’s crude helium and 40 percent of U.S. supply but will no longer receive federal funding to remain in operation at the end of this month unless Congress amends the law or passes new legislation to keep the reserve going. A depleted helium supply would likely lead to an increase in prices for the resource which could force some manufacturers to trim their workforce.

Congress has until October 7th to pass a continuing resolution.
