There area few cool movie rentals to check out this week at your local Redbox. One of the best new releases is “Mud,” originally released in theaters in April of this year. So grab a comfortable seat, a bag of popcorn, and relax!
Mud – PG-13 (Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Tye Sheridan)
In a movie industry dominated by superheros and robots, it’s always a welcome change of pace to have a well-crafted drama starring some of today’s most skilled performers. This coming-of-age tale flew under the radar this summer season with a limited release. Critics have championed the movie for its acting, and great acting is what’s on order here.
Two boys, Ellis and Neckbone, spend most of their time rafting up and down the Mississippi River when they discover a man named Mud (McConaughey) camping out on an island in the middle of the river, alone. We discover that Mud is on the run from bounty hunters and the law, as he plans on reuniting with his on-again off-again flame, Juniper (Witherspoon).
The performances are solid throughout the film, including the promising newcomer, Tye Sheridan, who holds his own against the veteran McConaughey in a few pivotal scenes. McConaughey continues to blossom outside the romantic comedy roles that have come to define his box office presence in recent years.
If you’re looking for a break from the CGI-laden summer blockbusters filling theaters this season, head out, and rent this new classic.
