This summer, millions of visitors will flock to lakeside destinations for a little relaxation and fun on the water. Although some are fortunate enough to travel to their favorite spot with a boat or Jet Ski of their own in tow, many will choose to rent their watercraft at the local marina and overpay for a short-term rental.
Zipcar for Boats
Following in the footsteps of services such as Zipcar and Airbnb, Fun2Rent has set out to carve its own niche in the marine industry by providing a peer-to-peer rental service for boats and personal watercrafts. Founded by a team of “powersports nuts,” Fun2Rent aims to connect those interested in renting a boat with owners looking to reduce the cost of owning a boat or make some extra money by lending their watercraft to a “neighbor.”
Although the peer-to-peer rental system hasn’t been without flaw in the past, so far Fun2Rent has avoided any major concerns. To protect both the owner and user, Fun2Rent provides a supplemental insurance policy that covers the renter for liability and collision coverage for the value of the unit as well as a $300K liability policy to cover the owner.
Help a Neighbor Out
So how does Fun2Rent work? Once an owner joins Fun2Rent, he or she is able to list their boat at no charge. Then, the owner selects which dates the rental unit will be available and sets his or her own rental price. Interested users must first set-up a free profile and complete a safety quiz. From there, a renter can request a reservation and will receive a text or e-mail when the owner accepts the reservation. If accepted, the user will log-in and pay for the rental before meeting with the owner to exchange keys and complete the necessary forms. Once the rental period is up, the owner will complete the post inspection and return the deposit. Done and done.
